Wired Router Connection Difficulties
 

Have had Blueyonder now Virgin Media Broadband for many years still have Motorola SB5100 surfboard cable modem. Just acquired ADSL wired router (told was compatible with virgin cable) to enable network sharing with son's xbox 360. Have followed all instructions but not able to get wired router to connect. On instructions it say's get isp to confirm parameter settings... WAN type, VPI,VCI and MTU settings ? Can anyone help with this or offer advice ??

If it is an ADSL router chances are it is not compatable, in the unlikely incidence that it has a WAN ethernet port and an adsl connection it will work.

Any chance of the make/model so we can google it?

Router's with inbuilt ADSL modems are generally incompatible with Cable as there is no means of connecting to an external modem. You cannot replace the cable modem with an inbuilt modem to a router. Whoever told you it was compatible didn't know their basics. Seek a refund as not fit for purpose.

Weird only details I'm seeing for that indicate it's some form of French product.

Did you get this router from a foreign person? Google doesn't seem to have much in English.

No results found in your selected language(s) for Evo-ASR 8400.

Chances are it is ADSL only how many ports are on the back and what are they labelled?

Bought from friend of friend few months back who said had used with Virgin but now gone wireless !!!

Taken me few months to get round to connecting, but now bought son xbox360 for christmas and he wants to game online.

Can you suggest inexpensive compatible option/s, would prefer to say wired.

That is ADSL only. I have a Sweex RO001 (note 2 letters 3 numbers) wired router and it has behaved flawlessly and required no setting up, a bit short on settings/options and SNMP support sucks but rock solid and I have streamed video from one pc to another through it whilst rebooting - didn't even stutter. It's about 23 quid.

They may have used with Virgin, but possibly had the ADSL version.

From the description of ports it isn't going to work with Cable. Stick it on ebay ;)

It's getting quite hard to buy a wired only router. Wireless routers, generally have the 4 wired local network ports, in addition to the wireless function, and you can normally disable the wireless from the router's setup pages (controlled from a log in on your internet explorer).

As a general rule, opt for a well known brand in the UK, such as Linksys or Netgear. Personally I've been happy with the Linksys WRT54GS (WRT54GL is an alternative), although this is now getting harder to find as they've new and improved things.
