Linksys router / virgin modem

Hi can somebody please please help. I have a linksys router at home and I am trying to connect my laptop through the wireless it's finding the wireless network and even says there's a excellent signal strength but limited or no connectivity. I've tried putting in a IP Address and DNS server address which then says good connectivity but it still won't let me on the internet the page keeps on saying address not found. I've rang Virgin up as I couldn't even connect to the net through the cable and after plenty of faffing around was told to update the drivers for the network or lan card but I have no probs connecting at work. It's one of the new virgin modems by the way.

make sure u turned the mains off to both of them

turn power on to modem first.. then turn the power on to the router 15-20 seconds later
then reboot ur pc..
if that doesn work try turning power to router on first waiting 15 then turn modem on
you have to link these

not at home at the moment but it looks like a Wireless-G Broadband Router WRT54G, sorry my technical knowledge isn't great so you'll have to keep it simple, there's only the onle cable running from the modem to the router and one from the router to the computer if I remember correctly, thanks

Your laptop connects to a work network, presumably wireless. What Operating System, and has it been setup by your IT dept to specifically work with the office network. It could well be that it is seeing and using your home wireless but other settings, such as connection info within Internet Explorer are the problem.

I've used my laptop at a hotel on their wireless network though

Re: Linksys router / virgin modem

If your main home computer is connecting correctly via the linksys router to the internet, using ethernet cable, then this willl be an issue with the wireless setup on router or laptop, and / or other configurations on your laptop. It won't be a problem with Virgin Media. On that basis I'm moving the thread to networking ;)

The IP address and stuff received by your laptop wireless should all be automatic. Don't set any DNS, IP or whatever on your laptop's wireless. In internet explorer, under connections, make sure that is all set to automatic, and no proxy details are entered.
