Help with router...
 

Hello i'm having trouble with a new router i have just bought. I'm a bit of a technophobe when it comes to stuff like this so please bare with me.

My old cable connected D-Link packed in a couple of days ago so bought a wireless-g Netgear, which is for cable connections as well. My plan was to just change the routers over and not worry about the wireless.

First of all, am i right in thinking that when the router is linked through everything i still should be getting the internet through my primary computer, the one linked to the modem?

Secondly, i have used the routers set-up wizard on the secondary computer and says i've got a connection. However i still can't access the internet on both computers. What is it i'm missing or have to do?

Make sure you have powered off the modem when you change the connection between modem <> router. The modem won't see the new router until you do that.

Connection should then work normally without a need for changes, unless you had something specific for your wireless before.

modem <ethernet> router WAN (internet) port
router LAN <ethernet> computer #1
router LAN <ethernet> computer #1
router <wireless> computer(s)

Setup the wired stuff before you log into the router and setup the wireless.

Thanks for reply Rob.

When you say power off, do you mean just put the modem on standby, or switch it off completely so there's no power? I've just been putting it on standby when i've been connecting the router.

Also, my last router wasn't wireless was just cable connected and was a few years when i installed it and cant really remember if there was any specific settings for it. You think that may be the problem if there was?

Would something like Zone Alarm maybe blocking it or is that a different issue?

Can we clarify. Is your broadband via a Set Top Box (STB) that also does your TV, or via a Stand Alone Cable Modem (SACM)? Procedures will vary between the two.

If it's a SACM then you should be completely powering off the SACM. Once you have powered up again, then the connection stuff should sort itself.

If it's a STB, it's a bit more complex.
Either clone the mac address being used by the original router into the new router, then power off (not standby) the STB, wire up, and repower,
or
Power off STB, wire up, power on, then from the PC browse to the registration page on Virgins Servers using internet explorer (you should get directed there automatically), and register the router with the STB.
