connection drops - fixed by reboot Wrt54g

Hi all,

This has happened quite a few times now and usually only affects my laptop...

I have a WRT54G V2.0 with DD-WRT V24 firmware (updated recently and think it might possibly have been a problem since I updated the firmware from V23...

My laptop has XP SP3 and I considered security in SP3 might be causing the drop.

The router doesn't have any security, only mac filtering.

When the connection drops I can't find any way other than rebooting to restore it. I'm thinking it's a service that has somehow failed but have tried restarting loads or different ones to fix it and nothing seems to work...

Does anyone know of any kind of tool or utility to repair a connection better than the windows connection repair feature.

When I check it shows the router available but won't connect to it...

I was having connection problems with my WRT54G, where the Internet would drop off (although WLAN saying it was still connected), but the computers directly hard wired into the router were fine for the Internet.

I upgraded my DD-WRT firmware to more recent and correct version, and it seems fine.

If you go on DD-WRT's website, they list what type of firmware is best suited for your routers model number. Even though it's a 54G...v 2.0 firmware might not work on a v1.1...if you get me.

I've updated the firmware now and it's still dropping out. There are two laptops the same in the house. The other doesn't suffer these connection drops. It's only been happening since I went to XP SP3. I've heard of other people suffering wireless issues since going to SP3. Apparently there were some changes which do affect wireless...
I might go back to SP2 as I can't find any fix other than rebooting. Tried restarting numerous services, nothing... just won't reconnect. All other devices work fine with the router. This is what it says in Event Viewer:
"The system detected that network adapter PRISM...Wireless Adapter - Packet Scheduler Miniport was disconnected from the network, and the adapter's network configuration has been released. If the network adapter was not disconnected, this may indicate that it has malfunctioned. Please contact your vendor for updated drivers."

Do you have any wireless management software running on the laptop (or is Windows alone 'driving' your wireless adaptor)? Could be a conflict if you do.

Nope, using Windows to manage wireless. I did try installing the utility for the wireless to see if it was any different but it's still doing it.
I know that in SP3 there were changes to IPSEC and 'Black hole' routers(?!).
In event viewer I noticed the following, event id 4202:

The system detected that network adapter PRISM...Wireless Adapter - Packet Scheduler Miniport was disconnected from the network, and the adapter's network configuration has been released. If the network adapter was not disconnected, this may indicate that it has malfunctioned. Please contact your vendor for updated drivers.
