DVDs onto Hard Drive
I have a small DVD collection http://www.invelos.com/dvdcollection.aspx/Hom3r
My job takes me out of the country regularly. So to do something in the evening I want to watch DVDs but space plus the fact I don't want to loss my DVDs mean I would like to put a few on to a WD passport HDD. Is there any software that would do this. The laptop is using XP Media Centre Edition, which if i'm correct allows to run DVDs from the HDD. Darn: can a mod correct the spelling in the title? |
Re: DVDs onto Hard Drivr
your best bet would be to rip them to divx. This will reduce them down to around 700mb per DVD, allowing for more DVDs on the HD :)

Re: DVDs onto Hard Drivr
Theres a nifty little program called WinAVI which will convert just about anything to anything, including ripping DVD's to whatever file format you want.
You can get it free, but it's watermarked. To remove it you need to register it, but it shouldn't be a problem removing it if you don't want to do that.. ahem. |

I've seen the finished result of people storing films on a HDD, isn't that the point of a Media centre PC? Would copy protected DVDs be affected? I don't want to copy then to another DVD so space/size is not an issue. |
Re: DVDs onto Hard Drivr
do a google for dvd to divx freeware.
Plenty on there with guides how to do it with what :) Just means you can store more DVDs on the HD. Media player can still see them and play them. |
Re: DVDs onto Hard Drivr
The easiest software I found to use was CloneDVD mobile, its used in conjunction with anyDVD, made by Slysoft http://www.slysoft.com/download.html , you have to pay for it but its worth it , all the freebies are too much hassle and mostly limited and basically ask you to pay for a full version anyway

Re: DVDs onto Hard Drive
I have already done this the previous replys about divx are the way fowards if H Drive space is at a premium, but in my case I did not want to loose to much quality and plus i have over 20 Tbs of hard disc to use so ive used various bits of software including CloneDVD & DVDshrink either will allow you to rip to a folder on your hard drive. Yes they will be large files anything between 3 to 4.7 gig files dependent on what type of film it is also I only backup the main film files without any extras (They are a waist of time)
Obviously DVD's have protection built in for good reason but as long as these are ripped with your own use in mind thats fine. If your using MCE windows you can make it see and disply your ripped DVDs HERES THE LINK WITH INSTRUCTIONS DVD SHRINK HERE Clone DVD you will have to pay for im affraid also you will need AnyDVD that works alongside it etc Hope it helps PM me if you have any specific questions! |

DVD Shrink

Re: DVDs onto Hard Drive
DVD Decrypter in File Mode should work for most DVDs, DVDFab Decrypter will work on the pesky buggers that have screwy protection.

Re: DVDs onto Hard Drive
Thanks guys, I've tried DVDShrink and it workd a treat.
Thanks for the suggestions. All I have to do is to get media player to find them. |
Re: DVDs onto Hard Drive
Once you have ripped them to file your better of using PowerDVD or WinDVD as they both have the option to play film from file.
