cannot resolve IP address

I cannot renew a new IP address on my PC yet when I connect the ethernet cable into my Xbox and restart the modem I am able to connect to XBL I think it has something to do with the physical address.could there be a problem with the DHCP server?

i asusme you are connecting directly to the modem then? if it was a dhcp issue your xbox wouldnt get an IP address

turn the modem off then hook it to the pc and start the modem back up, if it still doesnt get an IP then it might be a fault with the network card in the pc

There's been a few members who have reported faults with the modem not DHCP'ing though if you can DHCP on the XBox then it might not be the modem.. Anyway the members who have reported DHCP problems have had it cured by getting Tech support to reset thier modem from VM's side

It could be an issue with the mac address on your nic being a generic one,
we do see this quite abit with people using drivers supplied by XP for their nic, instead of the specific drivers.

a mac address is hardware specific so is nothing to do with drivers

All I can say is that I have seen this myself, and it has been an issue for the ex Ntl side of tech support for quite a while.

The easiest way to confirm this would be to take the mac address from the sticker on the bottom of the modem, and clone that accross to the nic, changing the last number up by one
IE. 00:14:a4:9c:XX:X1
and change the nic mac address to
00:14:a4:9c:XX:X2
(thats what woud have been the mac address of a usb connection).
