Two Modems?
 

Hi,

Had a new Ambit 256 from Virgin last week as my old one was under performing. The Ambit is now all working fine after phoning virgin and activating it.

Yesterday i plugged my old modem into my TV cable at the same time as having my new modem online.

I was stunned to find that both of the modems are working and I have two 20Meg lines!!!

Why is this? Do i need to phone virgin and tell that they have forgotten to de-authorize it or does it take a while for them to de-register the old one?

Well ringing up is down to you as that modem should be inactive and unable to receive any signal.

But you would probably hit STM a lot quicker:D

The only think I can think of is the activation team havent removed the old modem from the equipment screen

Well on my normal 20Meg line I was STM'd anyway so i plugged this old one in to see and it was a full 20Meg line without STM.

why would he ? As each modem will have its own mac and will surely both be subject to their own STM so your getting double . So if both used at once STM time would be the same if one after the other STM time would double

Not removing the modem from EQ screen will not make any difference because only one modem will have the correct occurence. I think OP is
from ex-ntl area and that modem is picking up the activation through old billing system.

Anyways now OP can exceed the STM limit twice.;)

how is that possible thou? wouldnt both modems be using the same DL/UL frequencies on the line? there technically would be a conflict if that. Just like trying to run 2 ADSL modems on the same phone line O_O

kiryu not really as 1 modem is connected normally whilst the other going over the tv line. so yeah you can run 2 modems at the same time, problem is to connect both to your pc at the same time

Hi,

Im in an ex-Telewest area, not NTL.

I have two laptops so one was going through the wireless on my normal connection and the other laptop was directly connected to the old modem.

i beg to disagree as the tv line shares the modem line through a splitter into your home. AFAIK and from reading previous technical docs on the docsis standard, tv channels use frequencies different than the modem for internet. the modems are already set to specific frequencies which are non selectable by the user, so from what i see, a modem may sync but only 1 modem can actually transmit/recieve traffic at any given time.

the only time it would be possible if VM provisioned unused frequencies for the 2nd CM which I read on US forums that some cable co's do in the US. But your bandwidth usually gets limited (ie: 30mb/4mb down to 15mb/2) which only really is splitting the frequency.

May have different macs but will be on the one account so would hit SRM quicker, it would be nice but it does not work like that.
