Looks like I'm connected via Wireless, but IE doesn't agree
Hi,
I've just set up my new Virgin Media wireless gear - their modem and netgear router. I've had no problems setting up the router and wireless connection, according Control Panel->Network Connections - it tells me I'm connected at full strength. I tried renaming the network and setting a new password - am again told I'm connected at full strength. But... Internet Explorer doesn't seem to agree! Just get page not found. Any ideas? Thanks!! A couple of things to try.
1 - Disable LAN connection so you only have the wireless connection. 2 - Reboot. :) |
Re: Looks like I'm connected via Wireless, but IE doesn't agree
Thanks. When you say disable the LAN connection - do you simply mean unplug, or disable a setting somewhere? I've tried the first option a few times - but will try again now as a sanity check! :-)

Re: Looks like I'm connected via Wireless, but IE doesn't agree
Control Panel->Network Connections
Right click and disable the cable connection one. |
Re: Looks like I'm connected via Wireless, but IE doesn't agree
Internet Explorer > File > Work Online
|
Re: Looks like I'm connected via Wireless, but IE doesn't agree
No joy with disabling LAN connection and rebooting everything. And I'm working online.
Thanks though. |
Re: Looks like I'm connected via Wireless, but IE doesn't agree
When you go into a command prompt, Can you ping an external site? e.g. bbc.co.uk
When you type in ipconfig/all what is your ip address? |
Re: Looks like I'm connected via Wireless, but IE doesn't agree
Nope, can't ping anything, can't connect to VPN either.
ipconfig/all give my IP address as 192.168.0.111 |
Re: Looks like I'm connected via Wireless, but IE doesn't agree
try pinging 212.58.224.131, then a tracert to it if it wont ping.
if it pings then it's a dns problem, what does ipconfig /all list as the dns servers? |
Re: Looks like I'm connected via Wireless, but IE doesn't agree
Thanks.
Nope, can't ping it and a tracert times out. The DNS servers are 192.168.0.1 and .0.2. |
Re: Looks like I'm connected via Wireless, but IE doesn't agree
were those the dns servers given out via the router or did you set those manually?
paste the output of 'nslookup www.bbc.co.uk', i expect those dns server ips are wrong, the ones for ex-ntl are 194.168.4.100 + 194.168.8.100 so you could try those instead. |
Re: Looks like I'm connected via Wireless, but IE doesn't agree
No, I didn't set them manually - the router settings are to get them automatically. The results are:
>nslookup www.bbc.co.uk DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds. *** Can't find server name for address 192.168.0.1: Timed out DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds. *** Can't find server name for address 192.168.0.2: Timed out *** Default servers are not available Server: UnKnown Address: 192.168.0.1 DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds. DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds. *** Request to UnKnown timed-out So looks like you're right? I'll try setting them manually... ---------- Post added at 22:34 ---------- Previous post was at 22:33 ---------- What's the second one? The ones you gave are both the same. Thanks! |
Re: Looks like I'm connected via Wireless, but IE doesn't agree
isn't 192.168.0.1 the router?
check settings in router. |
Re: Looks like I'm connected via Wireless, but IE doesn't agree
Urr, I'm getting confused now. I'm connecting to the router with 192.168.1.1 right enough... I'll go through all this again tomorrow and make sure to reboot everything in between. Thanks for all the help in the meantime.

Re: Looks like I'm connected via Wireless, but IE doesn't agree
UNINSTALL ALL VIRGIN SOFTWARE
First you need to fully uninstall the software from your computer, by first going to the system tray by the clock on desktop and exiting the wireless manager, then go to start > control panel >unistall programs> now unistall the wireless manager from here then exit . Next ensure the router is on and take a pen or a paperclip and look on the back of the router and you will see a small round hole big enough for the pen to go into press the reset button in this hole for approx 10 seconds then switch off the router and modem, reinsert the disk and follow the instructions to the letter. Ensure that you actually have the wireless switched on on your computer, do not assume it is on, the should be a switch. ----------------------------------------------- Quick router set up connect your laptop direct to the router in port 1to 4>open internet explorer>in the address bar put http://192.168.1.1/ when the login screen appears put in the username : virgin and the passphrase : password> the Netgear router page will now appear, down the left side click on Wireless settings>now name your network, something you remember and replace the passphrase with a new one at least 8 characters long and click apply, wait for it to finish updating and close the page. disconnect cable from laptop and router, ensure inbuilt wireless switched on, go to system tray and look for connect to a network icon ( not the virgin icon ) click it and find your network name, click connect put in your passphrase and when it says connected open a browser page and you should be connected. ------------------------------------------------------------ YOU CAN ALSO TRY THIS WAY AFTER REMOVING THE SOFTWARE AS ABOVE ------------------------------------------------------------------ You don't need the cd to set up VM routers, nor do you need a temporary cable connection. 1. Connect to wireless network. The network will be called "Virgin Broadband" the passphrase (WPA key) is preinstall. 2. Open a web browser. You will be presented with a setup page. Enter a new network name and password, ignore everything else, click apply. You will be prompted for a username and password - ignore it and close the browser. 3. Connect to the wireless network using you new network name and passphrase. 4. Happy surfing. It is actually quicker than running the cd. |
