Modem or router?

Hi all having some problems with my network, in that the internet will just stop, wired and wirelessly, the router is a Linksys WRT54G v7, the modem is a Ambit 200. The wireless and wired will say they are connected, but cant use the internet. I can also ping the router, but not the modem.

Check the router config pages and see if it's picking up an IP from the modem, also try the modem directly into a PC and see if you can get the interent.

if you have 2 or more machines running through the router, run a continuous ping to another machine and see if that drops at the same time as the net connection.

forgot to add - ensure at least one of the machines is wired into the router to eliminate direct wifi connection if they sit on the same workgroup / domain.

Ok, I'll try that, bearing in mind the downstairs PC is in use alot of the time, also i think the router still gets an IP when the internet has dropped, from what i can remember. Ill have a look next time it happens.

@Bender - What a good idea! why didnt i think of that...

Right i narrowed it down to the router, as it has just dropped. I couldnt ping across the network, or router itself. I dont want to have to buy another router, i already have a D-Link DI-624, which keeps dropping connections, and causing programs to crash.. The only thing that solves it is to press the reset button on router.

here's a mad idea (might only work if your router supports the following)

Disconnect the router from the SACM.

Disable any forms of WEP/WPA etc running on the router.

Enable MAC filtering, and setup all devices that you want on your local network, with the MAC's to allow them to work.

Leave off the wireless encryption

Hide the SSID

Connect back to SACM

Reboot.

I've seen the issue a few times (Albeit normally on Belkin routers where for some reason the wireless encryption will cause the router to lock up) The above makes the locks up a lot lot less frequent.

The other thing you can try to do if you prefer, is disable uPnP if it is running on your router.

The first option seems alittle long winded :p: May try in the future.

I'll turn upnp off though.
