"Windows cannot read from this disk"

I'm struggling to find a fix for this issue aside from a reinstall of Windows...

It's a Liteon CDRW Drive, here is the situation:

1) You can boot CDs fine at startup
2) Windows XP recognises the drive and doesn't show any issues.
3) If you open the drive in Explorer it doesn't show the contents, only 0 bytes.
4) Nero CD Test app recognised the presence of files on the disc and gave read speed results ok.
5) I've tried different CDs and the drive has read all the CDs when connected in another PC.
6) I've run sfc /scannow and the problem exists in safemode.
7) If you load Windows Media Player it will play the CD??

Any thoughts or suggestions would be really welcome...

I'm assuming something is stuffed in XP either connected to Nero, drivers or Windows XP burn wizard...

I think that's going to be the answer. I tried uninstalling the IDE channels and rebooted and got 'The following file is missing or corrupt c:\windows\system32\config\system.' After a bit of messing I restored the old registry and now get a blue screen at startup (0x0000008e). I had to get round that before by removing some startup entries.

It's still odd that Explorer says it's unable to read the disk and that it can't recognise the format yet you can load Windows Media Player and it'll play music off audio CDs...

IMO LiteOn = Rubbish.

If that's not the problem then maybe you used cheap media and the CD's have become unreadable.

I speak from experience as I once had a 52x LiteOn CDRW and I used cheap media and everyone of the disks burned are now unreadable.

These days I only tend to use Verbatim media and would not, knowingly, entertain a LiteOn product.

Definitely rubbish - the drive cost a quid at a boot fair! :) It's all fixed now anyway. I ended up reinstalling Windows again over the top from the I386 folder on the C drive. Really not sure what caused it whether it was drivers or something like Nero...
