windows xp stop error 8e
i wondered if anyone might have any idea on this one.
Basically the HD died but i recovered the contents by imaging onto a larger drive. Thing was both now and on the old hd before it failed, it was blue screening just as the windows desktop appeared and startup items were starting to appear in the taskbar. I've done chkdsk. It boots into safe mode fine. I've tried disabling startup items in msconfig. Not sure what it could be. I thought about graphics drivers but they would have loaded before surely? I tried creating a new profile and that also blue screened. |
Re: windows xp stop error 8e
8e is a KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
Usually means hardware compatibility error. Driver update etc... What happens in safe mode? Other ideas, different RAM, re-seat RAM, reduce RAM... |
Re: windows xp stop error 8e
Sounds like a driver problem to me, the driver loads moments before the welcome screen appears so thats likely when any errors are going to occur.
In safe mode, it uses a generic software VGA driver so you're unlikely to see any errors related to the main driver in safe mode since it doesnt load at all. What i'd do first is start up in safe mode and uninstall the driver. You can download a program called driver sweeper from Guru3d... make sure you delete all remnants of the driver and reboot... go back into safe mode, do it again just to make sure they've all been found and deleted, then you should be safe to boot up normally and install the VGA drivers once more. Oh also, what manufacturer is your GPU from? |

Safe Mode
Remove your nVidia driver Normal Boot Cancel New Hardware Found Wizard Download most recent nVidia drivers and install |
Re: windows xp stop error 8e
Cracked it...simply a case of using Hijack This and removing some odd startup items. I don't know what specifically, possibly an out of date version of Norton AV or some spyware/trojan app. It's all fine now...

Re: windows xp stop error 8e
Oh well...spoke to soon. Removed 81 viruses using NOD32 online scanner as well as some BHOs etc. and after a reboot...
"Windows could not start because the following is missing or corrupt: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\CONFIG Doing yet another Chkdsk /r to try and sort that out... (It's not my PC by the way :o)) |
Re: windows xp stop error 8e
You could try SFC /SCANNOW from the run box to check key system files. This will almost certainly require the XP cd. (and safe mode by the sound of it)
Since the error message indicates a corrupt hive this may not be the answer. You may wish to try a repair from the XP console if the SFC does not work. |
Re: windows xp stop error 8e
You will have to do a repair install of XP.

Re: windows xp stop error 8e
Just to be sure, id definately recommend downloading malwarebyte's anti-malware scanner just incase. It finds things even Spybot can't find, so if theres anything else dormant in you're PC, it will get rid and you shouldnt have a problem.
