Power supply question
Hi guys,
I am building my first quad core computer up. here are the details so far Mother board - Asus P5N-E SLI CPU - Intel Core 2 Quad - Q6600 - 95W - OEM Corsair 2GB PC2-6400 XMS2 (2x1GB) (x2 4gb in total) 500GB Maxtor - 32MB - SATA2 - 7200RPM x2 PIONEER DVR-215DBK 20x DVDRW Black SATA Thats all I have so far, graphics card will be not a top end beastie thinking along the lines of nVidia GeForce 9500GT 1GB PCI-E I will overclock it a bit but not to much, seems it is easy to overclock to 2.8/3.0ghz, i will use the provided stuff on the bios, it seems fairly straightforward. ANYWAY..... with this in mind, what powersupply should i get, I do not want to spend a fortune on it, basically I need to know what power do i require is 500W enough. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated Bigboab |
Re: Power supply question
500W will be fine for all of that lot easy.. the 9500 doesn;t need a lot of power compared to the 7800/8800 series. In fact why the 9500, go for the 9600 instead if you can...
For power supplies everyone has thier own brand they prefer, but you do tend to get what you paid for... |
Re: Power supply question
I got a beastie psu from ebuyer for around £40.00 and thats 700w
wooo hooooo I just realised I got a bronze star |
Re: Power supply question
Remember the power supply keeps the rest of your equipment happy so get a good one.
I would personally reccomend Seasonic. |
Re: Power supply question
i would spend a bit more on a psu as it is in some ways the most important and also a more expensive unit gives you a better protection against a power surge

Re: Power supply question
Ok, so you get what you pay for. What kinda price range would you suggest guys. In fact have a look here...
Link I really dont want to go over £50 is possible, so any suggestions guys? Thanks again for your time and help Bigboab |

Re: Power supply question
I had no problem with a Hiper but others have with the caps .I do not use them now. Ive used Antec Seasonic and OCZ and out of all of those only 1 Antec has died and it was within a couple of days so an inherent fault

Re: Power supply question
I'd recommend Seasonic. I had a couple of cheaper brands blow up on me (two in as many years), each time taking other system components with them. Its a b*tch when it happens! After the second time I fronted up, got a Seasonic and have been happy ever since.
Then again my brother has had a 500W OCZ the whole time with no problems, so that will probably see you (and your wallet) right. |

I'd definately recommend you dont buy a PSU from ebuyer names something like "ultra high uber PSU 10,000WATT" the only good thing is its price.. it most likely wont reach its peak wattage and its voltages will be all over the place, not to mention below standard amprage. |
