Which router?
Hi guys, my new edimax wireless N router is doing that annoying thing where it cuts out when using any kind of p2p software like bitlord etc. I have done some reading and it seems like some routers just dont handle all the connections with p2p too well. I like to have tons of downloads on the go at once, thats why I have a 20meg connection. I am prepared to replace the router but just wanna check with you guys first. Obviously the router has to be compatible with virgin media using the lan cable from the modem and I still want my full 20meg speed at least on my main pc which will be connected to the router through lan, will these routers do that?.
Was thinking of getting the Linksys WRT54GL or Linksys WRT54GS and putting this tomato software on it. Both get good reviews and seem quite similar anyway. 1Unless you look on amazon then there are some very poor customer reviews about drop outs and reboots, I also heard that different versions of those routers can be problematic which has left me lost lol. Which one of them would you recommend? I have a 20meg cable virgin media connection and wanna connect my PS3 and my ipod touch through wifi. Will these routers handle the full 20mb speed of my connection and will they really be ok with p2p software? And which of the 2 should I go for? One more thing, do the above routers have functions for port forwarding etc as I play certain games that need ports to be forwarded/opened. EDIT: done some more research it seems the GL is more stable than the GS. thanks in advance :) |

Anyone? :(

Re: Which router?
P2P opens up lots of connections, some routers have the capability of increasing maximum connections some dont... Game players searching game servers have the same problem.
Not saying that is your problem but sounds about right ;) |
Re: Which router?
How important to you is wireless speeds? You are using a "n" capable router but would be downgrading to a "g" speed.
If you are going to get the linksys, go for the GL. It's designed to be flashed with your choice of firmware. The GS will be less suited in that regard, unless you find an early version. I'd have a look at your torrent settings though. How many connections are you allowing at once. Is that overstressing things? |
Re: Which router?
I'm not allowing that many connections in p2p and even if i run one task at a time in bitlord with 10 connections per task it still hangs the router. I think the router itself is just not very good for p2p etc and I dont think I can open up more connections on it.
So am I right in thinking that the linksys GL will be good for p2p? I realise that i would be downgrading from an N router to a G but do you really think thats gonna make much difference since I am only gonna have one wireless device at a time using it, which would be my ps3 or maybe a laptop, but never both at same time. So wouldnt they get just as good a connection with a G router with my 20meg connection since the router is 54meg??? |

p.s just wished somebody would help me regarding my router issues :( http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/87...s3-online.html |
Re: Which router?
I would vote for the GL as I know that people like its customisation with custom firmware. We have one at out techies getting flashed and set up to run a private VLAN for vistors wi-fi.
I would have done this myself but not done it before and not got the time to play. |

Is that netgear router good for handling loads of incoming connections then? like u get with p2p software? And which would be better the netgear or the linksys? On tomshardware they hate linksys lol. so many different opinions. I wish someone who does tons of p2p downloading could just say, i have a router which handles p2p great with lots of downloads going and the model is...... |
Re: Which router?
I have the Linksys WRT54GL router and put the DD-WRT firmware on it. It works very smoothly and I've had no issues. I'm on the 10MB VM connection, and it's great. When I run latency tests, I get either <1 or 1, so it's fast.
