Athlon 1Ghz processor 256 Ram

I know my PC is old now around 8 years old to be exact, but it has started to move onto the next step of something before I have had the chance to click on the OK button.

Same goes for when I click back or forward on a web page, it often moves back 2 pages instead of the one, other transactions act like this too, and it can be very off putting.

And say I click on one of the single smilies, instead of creating one, it creates 2, I have to admit that this is intermittent, but is happening more and more now. I have just noticed however that it appears to create 2 if you click on a smilie which is next to a full stop for some reason or another

I have an optical wired USB mouse, and please don't laugh, but still use the dear old un-supported Windows 98 S.E.

This is one of the reasons that I will be getting a new PC in the fullness of time, but curious as to what may be causing the problem I refer to above.

:)

Blimey, I was just clearing out some stuff for the skip before and found an old Gigabyte GA7 motherboard with a Slot A (yes slot not socket) Athlon thunderbird on it and a couple of 256MB sticks... now if you weren't getting a new machine you'd have been welcome to the memory ;)

Ay up owd cocker, now there's nowt wrong with having an Athlon Processor, I say this because I'm still using my 1.3 GHz Palomino (running Windows 2000) to this day. :erm:

It could well be that your processor could be overheating causing the said problem. Check your heatsink and make sure that the compound hasn't set like a lump of concrete (rendering it useless) and have a butcher's at your fan to see if there isn't an inch of dust on top of it, Also double check the seating of the processor and other devices on the motherboard - heat induced chip creep can be a real bitch. :D

Ditch your win 98 though - even nostalgia has it's limits! PSsst got a nice copy of Windows 3.11 for Workgroups if you're interested ;)

Si thee :Sprint:

Have you tried a new mouse? Mice buttons often get in a random double click state when they are worn.

I would agree, Try a new mouse out because I recently had the same problems with my mouse.

I tried a new mouse, but I could not get a driver for it, even though it said it supported 98.
