Intermittent issues though it's nothing to do with VM it's just not the most reliable site and often falls over briefly here and there.

Try using www.opendns.com and see if that helps full instructions on the site takes about 2 minutes to set up and is fully reversible.

Unlikely. If he's getting content encoding errors, his machine has already done all the DNS lookups it needs to.

In fact, Content Encoding errors are usually caused by the server specifying one kind of data in the headers and then returning another.
