New Printer - B&W Only (Laser) ?
 

I'm looking to get a Laser Printer (or Mono Printer) for a friend who needs to print a lot of Black & Wite Text & maybe Tables & a few drawings.

I know many like Laser Printers, so what are the best options as she wants LOW cost Ink. Her printer (3 in 1 Epson takes load of ink & she does not want Colour, but has to buy all Inks every few weeks as they do get used on Documents). I know there is a Black & White only option in settings, but she wants a Black Only (Mono) Printer.

Important factor is CHEAP Ink/Tonner

any advice or links. i know i saw a laser printer in staples for £50 the other day, no idea on Ink

For reliability alone, I always go HP for lasers. Our previous office series of HP 4 and HP 6 types did some 10+ years service before we retired them in the last year.

Just looked at PC World as a starting place for her. Three Printers under £80 (HP, Brother & Canon). Toner are £50-80 :rolleyes:

Is there another option of Laser with Cheaper Toners?

I've had the HP LaserJet 1200 for about 3 years and never had to change the toner yet... It's been hammered at times too.

eBay have cheaper toner.

Thanks for that. I guess 2,000 pages a Toner is 4x Packs of 500 A4 Sheets. hats a LOT of Printing lol. I'll pass over the info to my friend.

In some cases, the cartridge is more expensive than the actual printer.

I can't really comment on their home lasers, but Lexmark's workgroup lasers have bad reliability. At work, we needed an A3 Colour Laser and (against my advice), we bought a Lexmark C910n (the n is for Network).

This was about 4 or 5 years ago. 2 years after we bought it, the Duplex (double sided) printing unit failed. Even though all that had failed was a small optical sensor, Lexmark would not sell us or our maintenance company the parts. They would only sell a new duplex unit at a cost of around £400-£500. We simply removed the unit.

The printer had an above average (we have HP Laserjets older than this printer which have never needed a technician) amount of repairs including one motherboard replacement until eventually it failed last year, and our maintenance company contacted Lexmark who said it would need a major refurbishment. So, we retired it and bought a Colour A3 laser from HP. The Lexmark printed around 1,000-2,000 pages a month, which is well within it's design specs.

Ironically, although it got moved to another lab because it didn't do A3 and was too slow, the HP Color Laserjet that the Lexmark replaced is still going strong.

Not saying all Lexmarks are bad. I've had a Lexmark z605 inkjet that, while it is a little expensive to run for anything more than the odd printout (which is all I need it for), it seems to have been quite reliable.

Samsung !, Samsung !, Samsung !

These are pretty much the standard for cheap lasers

They can fairly easly be refilled with toner - can be a bit messy

You'll get about 1000-1200 pages out of the toner/drum which comes with it before need refilling. ( I did on 16ppm one)
(edit:user reviews on ebuyer, seem to indicate less than this on 22ppm one)

Have a 16ppm at home, bought the later one 22ppm for son at uni ( at same price as 16ppm)

usually about £49

or £42 + del - here

so around 4p per page even if you bought a new printer each time it runs out ! - a lot less then ink jet ( unless using refilled carts)

I've got an old Samsung ML-2010 mono that I use as a reserve printer.

Cheap as chips and it just keeps on going.

Probably cheaper to buy a new Samsung each year when the toner runs out. Not environmentally the best practice but it's definitely cost effective.

I've had a HP1100 laserjet for many years (which I got dirt cheap when Software warehouse went bust), I think it was about 4 years before i had to change the toner cart, I'm on the second one and the printer is still going strong. Many places like Cartridge World will refill them, or have refilled/refurbished ones available too where all the moving and worn parts have been replaced, that might save a few quid on the costs, and where i got my replacement from (29 quid instead of 50 odd)

HP Lasers are the dogz..

I bought an old 4100n a while back for a client. It cost about 75 quid and is rated to a million prints lifespan!!!

Quick, crisp and it just keeps motoring on. Colour me impressed..

I recently bought a black and white laser Samsung to replace the Brother laser I had had for about 7 years, I think I replaced the toner once, maybe twice on it.

The Brother was fine so i'd recommend them, and I'm happy with the Samsung, which i bought 'cos it was the cheapest laser at the time. It's a ML-2010R, i think I bought it from play.com.

I have that lexmark printer pretty good so far but i've only had it a month or 2.

I've not finished the starter toner yet but if lexmark think i'm paying their prices for toner they have another thing coming!

I only went for that perticullar printer as it was the only one in the price range i could find that supported the network printing.

p.s I'm planning on trying one of these, Lots cheaper than the lexmark ones ;)

I seem to remember that some printers include a new drum in the 'cartridge' you replace, while others only replace the toner, with the drum as a separate consumable.

Afaik, in general, the drum has a longer life than the toner?

I can't pretend any experience of 'home' laser printers, but kyocera were one brand that offered 'toner only' refills, although they were based on LCD, rather than laser technology??
