No Sound via PC to TV

Scenario.
PC (nvidia 7600gt) used to be connected to HDTV via DVI to HDMI and the sound was carried by 3.5mm jack (speaker output on PC) to 3.5mm jack (PC audio in on TV)
Everything worked fine and dandy.

FF to today. Installed Nvidia 9800GT picture goes via the same DVI to HDMI cable but there is no sound.

The Audio cable is OK (checked)
Audio output is OK (checked)

Cant use RCA sockets as the TV only accepts PC audio in when HDMI is selected (TV doesnt have VGA D-Sub)

Could it be that it used to work because the 7600gt was pre HDCP GC and the 9800gt is HDCP and that the HDCP side of things is switching off the PC audio in because it wants the audio signal over HDMI and no other source (expecting that if no audio is supplied over HDMI then audio will be supplied externally)

Any idea's.

Thanks

Al

TV is a Tecnika 26-107 720p
GC is xpertvision 9800GT

Is there a setting in the TVs audio menus? some do.

No mate, been through all the settings.

The only change has been the GC, even tried older drivers etc and still no joy.

strange one this. Have you tried a pair of headphones on the pc to ensure it is outputting? can you check audio on tv without hdmui cable connected?

Checked output with headphones and also checked lead. All OK.
With HDMI disconnected and on HDMI channel there is sound.
Also as PC boots and goes into windows that stupid noise windows makes to wake you up after the half hour boot time plays through TV but from then onwards there is no sound coming from the TV regardless of what is being made by the PC.

In theory if the card says its supports hdmi and does not transport audio like the ATI cards do then you would have thought it wouldnt be HDCP that causes these problems. However it appears the TV is looking for audio through the HDMI cable when it is plugged in which it did not do before. Are these cards agp or pci e(I aint seen a 9800GT so I am guessing they are pci e)? if they are pci e does your board support sli? if so you could run both cards. Have you tried the original card again just to rue out a rogue setting?

Cards are PCI-E 9800gt is a newer variant of the 8800gt with a smaller die. Board isnt SLI unfortunately but I may try the older card tomorrow just for peace of mind.

Just tried the reg hack and it hasnt worked, but its late, im knackered and I could have gone wrong somewhere.

If it doesnt work we have ordered 5.1 speakers with wireless remote which will solve the speaker problem.

I actually brought the 4850 on Thursday from PC world £112. But it went back cause when I got home I discovered it was a used one.

I did have a play with it tho and had no end of trouble with the drivers 8.5 through to 8.9. The card wouldnt bench at all and all progs stopped responding before they started. But the HD output was excellent, the card was super quiet if a tad warm. That went back and I got the 9800GT which has Physics-X built in.

That may well be why it was a used one ;)

it maybe that when you connect the dvi-hdmi lead that windows is trying to send the audio through the hdmi, cable as some of the latest nvidia cards are capable of outputting audio as mine do which they are the gtx280's.

what version of windows are you running and are you running onboard sound or a separate card?

is there a audio input on the graphics card? there will be a connection on your mobo that a lead will connect into then in to your graphics card

Re: No Sound via PC to TV

Nope, no audio input on the GC.
