Get full 20 meg but have SLOW ftp downloads!!
 

Hi guys,

Read a lot of posts but cant find any answers so I'm asking for help please.

I'm on XL and do get 1.83mb when using the ntl gamefiles link as found as a speedtest on this forum.
My internet is FAST, oh yeah!

but I use an ftp site to download stuff (tv shows mostly) its a private site so I can give much detail but its ssl based.

Anyway my problem is very slow and unstable speeds when downloading via my 20mb, speeds varies from 18k to say 418k ( but like a heartbeat ie up and down all over the place and the average speed is 50k yes half a meg!

when I use my neighbours connection (his wireless does not have a password, lol) which is 2mb I get a full constant 236k via the ftp site so its nothing to do with the site itself!

So, virgin have the stm yes but thats a different issue as for me using the ftp via my connection is ALWAYS the same even if I havent used my internet at all for a week.
I read somewhere that there was a blanket cap on ftps and other stuff like newsgroups.
is there any way around this problem??
cant really call virgin as its not a general speed issue but a capping issue, maybe my connection itself is capped?? how can I find out.

No one is really discussing this stuff but it must affect a lot of people, I'm not sure but i think using a proxy server may help the problem.

I'm not looking to take the **** and download like 20gig every single day of the month but when I do download something I dont wont it to take so long ie a 1.1gb hd tv show takes about 5 hours, lol and yes I know its kinda illegal but its for my personal use.

any advice would be most welcome as I really dont know where to go here
oh and I dont use my neighbours wireless to download stuff I only use it as a speed conparasen.

at my wits end here please give me some hope,

Do you go through a router?? Also VM have no port based caps as far as anyone is aware

Hi Kymmy,

Yeah I have a router, its a lovely netgear 614 v6 oh and the ftps port would be classed as a high number.
I will see if i can find where I read about vm blanket capping these.

Not aware of any setting in the router that my help the speed issue oh and when my pc is connected directly to the cable modem it is slightly faster on the ftp, maybe 10k more nothing major

do a tracert to the ftp and gamefiles from your connection, then a tracert to the ftp from your neighbours connection. You're probably using a different (congested?) route to the ftp than your neighbour is.

As for the blanket cap, did they mean the STM?

I'm guessing the routing will be different yes and mine is more congested.
Thing is, how can you get round the issue as I cant choose the routing or can I ??

Regarding cap info (still looking for the link) it was seperate from stm but I guess more people would be on here if it was so.

Anyway, what options do I have from here?
If its routing its out of my control
If its cos I'm capped its out of my control

Once I'm pointed towards a solution I can do the research to find the rest.

I'm testing from work and using my home pc remotely so can only check the vm and not the neighbours without messing around and I dont have time for that today.

yeah ftp speeds have been appalling recently around this time
tracert 14 hops to my ftp between 30 and 55ms each

and web download stability is pretty appalling aswell, although browsing is fine

Test 3: 1024K took 6487 ms = 157.9 KB/sec, approx 1301 Kbps, 1.27 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 14034 ms = 145.9 KB/sec, approx 1202 Kbps, 1.17 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 1347 Kbps, 1.32 Mbps
2mbit connection

usenet speed seems unaffected, maybe due to using multiple threads

Ok well its kinda an issue to post the whole tracert but I can post the outbound hops up which are different without showing any info regarding the end destination this way its clear to see a totally different path taken by vm

Ive cut both of these down from 20 or so hops but the last hops are the same anyway

so yeah, its a very different route oh and dont go by the speeds its always SLOW in the evening as the area is oversubscribed (next doors is always fast, constant 2mb) and yes I know I'm on cable and next door is bt so its a diff kettle of fish but as I said before day time or overnight is mostly 1.83mb from testing so in theory speed is there and six months ago my site speed was pretty good and stable (max 8mb if I remember) its slowed down BIG time around the same all the stm **** happened?

anyho is there anything I can do here???

Glad to hear your working ok zer0, wish my luck was as good.

I'm still having the same issues
just did a speedtest and got 1.86mb/sec average with is great for an evening but my ftp site is only giving me 56k/sec yep so thats half a meg basically

there must be something i can do here?
