wireless router as webserver..?
 

I was wondering if anyone makes a domestic /SOHO grade wireless router that also includes webserving capabilities?

I beleive some linksys routers can have a firmware upgrade to allow this?

I have some simple websites that id like to host but would like them to be non pc dependant and they dont really warrant web hosting fees !

I know that routers allow you to specify the webserver address so that all port 80 requests are pointed in that direction but never heard of one that actually stores the website for you

They'd have to very small websites, considering the vast majority of routers only have between 2-8mb storage on them(and the firmware takes a large amount of this up).

Some IP webcams and networked printers store "websites" (well, a few pages of http) - is that the sort of thing you had in mind?

Some routers also combine Network Attached Storage but I'm not sure that these can be used as a web server too. How about a tiny Linux box?

What you've also got to remember is that the website would be very limited without things like PHP/MySQL which are server side apps.

Do what I did and grab and old P3 with half a gb of memory, not much good for as a PC these days but happily runs a number of websites and mailserver

I was just thinking simple web design eg frames,pics/text etc not high traffic/bandwidth or anything with no SSAs and without having to have a pc running. I'm surprised there is no commercial product out there . I do have a buffalo linkstation nas but in its standard form,it cant be used to serve out though i gather that you can install third party freeware. I dont want to risk that though as i'd probably knacker it as the 3rd party OS is linux based and im not an expert on console command linux,more a follower of ubuntu..

You can get web hosting for as little as a £ a month (or even free if you don't mind ads!), I'd be more inclined to go down that road!

Can anyone recommend a relaible inexpensive web host? I would want to transfer my existing domain. My existing provider wants a renewal of £50 pa.Its just basic,low traffic website stuff....dont really want to use isp webspace as i want my domain url to show only not my isp name/url string

See my Dark Side thread as I'm a windows person who's recently gone into linux (you'll see in that thread that it's not all command line), you'll probably find that if there is a router like what you want it'll be linux based... (even my DVD/Media player and also my Satellite is linux based)

You should be able to just but a domain name and link it to your isp website. The web address should show up as the domain name you chose.
