Need free software for printing CD sleeves
 
Anybody got any thoughts?

Needs to be a) simple, and b) free.

Nope, Nero went in the great 'Desktop Applications Cull' of 2007 :(

(Don't suppose you know how to lighten an entire image (I want a sort of transparent effect) in The Gimp do you? ;)

You could use Pressit (here)

I use it for all my CD's, DVD's & the cases, its free and really easy too!

You install it, launch, choose the style you want (CD face or covers) right click anywhere, click on Import image, find ur image then right click on it and choose "fit to..." where you can fit it to any template!

Also works with VHD & audio casette tapes too!

pick the colour, or if you want the whole lot, select the area, go to:
Layer > Transparnecy > Colour to Alpha

this will blend your image to be sort of transparent and pick your colour from
