Installing an OS on a PenDrive. Anyone tried it?
I fancy playing Dungeon Keeper2 - it doesn't work in XP - I know there are patches n all that, tried them all, it is unstable as hell in XP. So I need to either run it in 98 or 2000.
I have a 4Gb Pen Drive doing nothing much, so I was thinking install the OS to that and boot as required. Before I start to pig about for hours I am going to be lazy and just see if anyone has done it and got it to work. Cheers. |

run 98 it in virtualware or some sort

Re: Installing an OS on a PenDrive. Anyone tried it?
I thought that. Stuck Virtualbox on. First off I totally forgot 98se isn't a boot disk. So I booted from a 98 boot CD. Then ran fdisk, formatted the partition, ran setup from the 98cd and it wouldn't have it.
Tried to stick 2000 on, it seemed to be working, stuck the code in, ran setup, it keeps repeating setup, doesn't seem to want to boot from the virtual drive, I can't figure out why it is doing it. I changed the boot order and forced it to boot from Hard Disk, just keeps repeating the setup process. Can Virtualbox deal with D3D? I would rather install it in a Virtual PC if I am honest. More convenient. I wonder if it will run in Linux in Virtualbox with Wine? |

ive got win98SE cds that are bootable?
thing is though if your mobo is relatively new there will be no drivers for win98 anyway |
Re: Installing an OS on a PenDrive. Anyone tried it?
The one I have isn't!? I could make it so, but I can't be bothered, as you say, I won't get drivers for my 8800 so it's pointless. There aren't 2000 drivers, hoping that is just because the OS is no longer supported and XP drivers will work.

couldn't you copy the win98 folder into the VM and run the setup from that?

I really don't know It seems possible, I guess? I need to play about with it and see what you can and can't do.

All you need in theory is enough control to go into the folder and run setup.exe I'll be interested to hear if it works. |

My missus plays DKII in XP now and again, not had problems with it being unstable.
make sure you have the latest patches, and run it in compatabilty mode, should be ok. |

edit:
also d3d last I heard wouldn't work in vmware or virtualbox virtual machines |
Re: Installing an OS on a PenDrive. Anyone tried it?
Can't use 98, no 8800 drivers. DK2 in XP is hit n miss from what I can see. Works for some not for others. Got a whole load of patches for it that supposedly sort the problems. Everytime I upgrade I try them, it can play for hours fine or it will crash to desktop every 5 mins.
Tried sticking 2000 to a Pen-Drive - BSD on initial reboot! Kinda expected that. If Virtualbox doesn't have D3D support (expected that as well) then there is no point. |

Linux can boot of a pendrive but I don't think windows likes booting off usb devices.
You may be able to run the game in WINE under linux running off a USB drive though. I know Ubuntu can be run off a USB Stick (Well the liveCD image can but can't see why if thats possible it wouldnt be possible to get full ubuntu working.) since that's one of the ways of installing it on the Asus EEE ;) Although it's probably not going to be easy to get both the OS and the Game to run properly. |
Re: Installing an OS on a PenDrive. Anyone tried it?
Surely the easiest thing would be to install Windows 98 on a separate drive/partition to XP/Vista and dual boot? You can pick up a smallish HD for cheap money these days.
