Using the provided wireless router as a 'wired' router to connect both pc & Xbox 360
 

Hi all. Probably a daft question, but no harm in asking. Using the Netgear wireless router I got with my package, can I use this as a normal wired router to connect both my pc & Xbox 360 to the net at the same time? I don't want to use the wireless side of it, as the laptop stays in the same place all the time, & security reasons. Many thanks. :)

Yes you can. I don't think you even need to install the router software on the PC either

No problem at all just remember to remove the antenna if not installing the disk to help make it a bit more secure.

Cheers guys. So I just connect the modem to the router, plug in the laptop & 360, switch modem on then router, & that's it? It'll just act as a basic stand-alone router?

Yes you can connect 4 devices via cable to router.

If you feel you want security on the router then follw the instructions below.


connect your laptop direct to the router in port 1to 4>open internet explorer>in the address bar put http://192.168.1.1/ when the login screen appears put in the username : virgin and the passphrase : password> the Netgear router page will now appear, down the left side click on Wireless settings>now name your network, something you remember and replace the passphrase with a new one at least 8 characters long and click apply, wait for it to finish updating and close the page.

That will be the wireless side secure.

Hiya, me again. Ok, I have the router up & running now. Have gone into the Netgear settings stuff. Have disabled the wireless side of it, via the Advanced/Wireless Settings, so basically I assume it's running as a standard wired router. Is this ok, or is it best to leave the wireless side of it running?

If you haven't got any wireless kit, then you can leave it switched off

If you ever get a PS3 then you can switch it back on.

Or if you pay £50 for the Xbox Wireless Adapter ;)

Once I get another cable, the 360 will be wired into the router.
