Linksys WRT54GS
Been ok with this for months but would now like to sort this issue out. To connect to the wireless network from my Vista o/s laptop I have to first power up Virgin modem until both 'Sync' and 'Ready' LEDs have stopped flashing then I can switch on the Linksys router.
If I turn the router on before the Virgin modem has fully booted or both at the same time, I can't pick up the network. I believe the issue is with the router having to wait for the modem to deliver the IP address. Is there a way to fix this? I always swtich off all elec stuff at night or when not using for a prolonged period so leaving both modem and router permantly on is not an option for me. cheers |
Re: Linksys WRT54GS
Unfortunately that is the way it works, I have one of these myself and if it needs resetting, I have to boot the modem first. I leave mine on all the time, so doesn't cause me a problem.

Re: Linksys WRT54GS
cheers, thanks for confirming
my previous VM modem plug/transformer burnt out a few months ago and from checking the replacement notice it get's really warm.....hence I always switch off everything for fear of elec fire (ok probably a little para but it's a habit I picked up from my father) |

Re: Linksys WRT54GS
I also have to leave mine WRT54GS on 24/7. or I have to go through the same boot up routine which is a pain.

Re: Linksys WRT54GS
What firmware are you using?
I've never had this issue with the WRT54G but have only ever used third party firmwares (initially DD-WRT but now Tomato). Just wondered if it was related to the Linksys firmware rather than the router itself. |
Re: Linksys WRT54GS
Guys, if a device is intended to be switched on/off, it would have an on/off switch. Have you seen any such switch on a cable modem or a wireless router?

Re: Linksys WRT54GS
Never had that problem with my WRT54GS connected to my ntl 120 modem.
The both get switched on at the same time at the wall socket and always connect first time. And watching the lights the router finishes booting before the modem has sync and ready lights on. Quote:
But why would I want to leave the modem and router on when I'm not using them? I have always switched both off when not in use, just switch them on when I want to. The modem & router boot up & sync/connect quicker than the PC boots up so I wouldn't save any time by leaving them on, just waste electricity. |
Re: Linksys WRT54GS
pretty sure the thibor and tomato firmwares dont have this issue. not 100% on this as I pretty much leave them both on 24/7.

Re: Linksys WRT54GS
Iv had a WRT54G and a WRT54GS...
both routers require the router to be turned on first.. then the modem these devices are safe to be left on 24/7 the basic answer i suppose to the question is. No.. you will most likely find that most routers will have to be turned on first then the modem |
