Should I change my router?

I've just received a router from Virgin (Netgear WRG614).
Should I swap it with my current one (D-Link DKT-110)?
Or hang on to it for a spare?
My laptop and iMac have been 'dropping off' it seems ever since we upgraded to 10mbs (coincidence maybe). Would a new router make a difference?

Dropping off as in the wireless connection to the router cutting out? or the internet connection cutting out, also what modem do you have?

Dropping off as in losing internet connection.
1. Throughout the evening a little box keeps popping up to tell me I am now connected.
So I assume that I have momentarily gone offline and not realized.
2. I often have to go into my wireless settings to reconnect as the connection has gone.
3. My hubbies iMac is connected via an ethernet cable (to the router) so he can play poker with a stable connection, but he still loses it anyway. He restarts his machine a few times every evening.
We have a Virgin modem that we got last year E08C007
I haven't connected directly to the modem as we are both online at the same time in the evenings.
I could go hours without a problem, but sometimes it seems to go on/off all night, or day if I'm at home. It's an intermittent thing.

An "E08C007" is a ntl: 250 modem (i think), and that handles 10meg fine.

The problem your describing sounds very similar to what happening to me, in that a little popup saying "Connected to xxxx, signal strength xxxxx", thn after a few moments i would lose all connectivity, but the wireless would still be connected, then i have to restart my wireless adapter to fix the issue.

I can't really help you on that matter because im still trying to fix the issue my self.

ok, thanks :). Hope you get it sorted, then you can tell me what to do. lol!

Yeah, when I check the wireless network connections via the icon in the corner, it says I'm connected, so I disconnect and reconnect and it's fine until the next time.
The other day I didn't get any satisfaction until I rebooted my laptop.

I turn the router and modem off at the wall every night at bedtime, and then back on again when I get home from work. I wonder would all the constant rebooting be part of the problem?

Re: Should I change my router?

Well turning your router and modem off at night does sav a little power bu its negligable the amount of power they use, your network maybe slow because when you turn your modem/router back on, it has to reacquire an IP address from the DHCP server, which can take upto 5 mins, therefore if you leave your modem/router on, it will keep the IP address and wont neeed to renew it everytime. If you get what i mean lol. ;)
