Why? [Netgear LAN Speed]

Please explain why - if there is an answer. I have a Netgear wired router connected to my VM 20Meg BB. One port is connected to my PC and another to my sons Laptop.
When I do a speed test my sons laptop registers 17/18 meg, yet I can only register 14meg.
Does processor speed / memory / graphics card influence the DL speed. Thanks

Trojans, adware and some anti-vir, firewalls can all have adverse effects on DL speed. Do a thorough housekeep on your PC and try with just the xp firewall running for a test just to see if there is a difference.

You might also try TCPOptimizer.

Could be that your network card is not up to the job, or needs to be set to half/full duplex.

Are they running different operating systems? Vista auto-tunes its TCP/IP stack, XP doesn't.

With this advice in mind, I just disabled my Kasperky AV software and my DL speed increased from 15 to 18.5 Meg. Would a different AV be the solution. Cheers

Depends on what you are downloading from I know KIS can sometimes be a problem on higher transfer speeds if a lot of connections are involved.

personally I think scanning stuff as its downloaded is a bit wastefull really considering your only then going to scan it again with the resident scanner

This is exactly what I experienced with Kaspersky and most of the other major AV apps.

Disabling most of Kaspersky's features will help but what is the point of paying for an app and then having to disable most of it's features?

ATM I am using free avg8 with the web surfing thing disabled. I don't use IE but disabled it anyway.

So far, it does not seem to slow my machine BUT considering it is supposed to be a combined malware/av app, it has not found even a tracking cookie?

So how effective it is remains to be seen.

Mind you the last alternative scans I performed came up clear as well.

At least AVG8 does not seem to suffer, so much, from the slew of false positives that caused me to give up on free AVG7.

Trying avast at the moment, not sure if its effecting my Download speeds or not, can't get a conclusive test since it doesn't seem to matter if its on or off

I think someones fired up a Wireless Lan close to one of the Channels I was using
