VM Employees - what's it like?
 

Just wondering as I live near one of the big VM offices and lost my job recently. I've thought about VM many times as I want to work for a big company again with all the thrills and benefits etc. and like the idea of big TVs etc in the offices that I've heard about...

Can anyone comment on working at VM? What's their current position on employment, are they just taking on through agencies etc.?

There are selective amounts of people on this forum who will not disclose their status with VM -- for whatever reasons they may be. That you cannot debate.

I suggest you pursue it further (if you're interested in VM).

As far as I know (and I don't work for VM, just have talked to a lot of staff members), working for VM is like working for any large company. Whether it is good, or not, depends on your line manager.

In fairness, I do not think the poster was asking that anyone reveal they work form VM unless they wish to. People have done this before, and usually ended up politely being asked not to by one of the mod team.

I know that this site is liked by some VM management, and disliked by some others. In fact one ex-mod (he left long before I was a mod) was told by his manager that unless he stopped posting in Cableforum, things would be difficult at work.

Thanks Stuart C, that's true. I didn't want anyone to say they worked for vm, i wouldn't have minded if people gave the views of someone they knew who do or did or people that have at some stage. I used to work for a big blue chip energy company for 5 years then a much smaller company for just under a year. I had a lot more variety in the smaller company workwise but they firmly believed i was better off in a big company with better structured training and development. I knew a couple of people who worked for VM and heard different views about them.

the line manager thing is so so true. I left the energy company because of a new line manager who changed my job role and wanted me work on several projects but wouldn't pay me any more money

You only know the answer to that, if you work VM (in all fairness).

You are acting as if he is forcing people to reveal they work for VM. I made the point that he is not, and that we (as a team) frown upon people forcing people to admit they work for VM on this forum.

We do not require that everyone who posts here tells us where they work, and nor do we have the right to.

If, however, they wish to state where they work, we will not stop them. There are people on this forum who work for VM, and there are people who work for VM and are happy to talk about it. We have not coerced them in any way to do this, that is their choice.

It's also worth noting that if people don't want to, they do not have to reply to this thread.

As i think has said before, it really depends which area you decide to go work in, some parts of VM are very nice to work for, as long as your not a contractor (aka kellys) or work in customer support (phone lines) then you'd probably enjoy working for them.

Certainly networks, not field ops but central networks, is good to work for, and I'd imagine the same goes for most office based positions.

No idea about the more field based stuff, and I'd imagine working in the contact centres is much of muchness.

It depends what kind of job you are after, the centres in the Birmingham and Dudley areas are more to do with the Customer services side of the business AFAIK.

If you are a good talker and like to sell or help people out then it could be the job for you. If you are on the phones you will use a headset.

Plus you get benefits of the type you would expect from a telecommunications company after 3 months.;)

Depending on the centre it will either be Virgin staffed or Agency staffed.

If they are advertising at present then give it a go, you have nothing to lose.
