Wireless printer sharing - help request
 

Hello,

I have a Virgin Media 10 Mb cable connection and have recently installed a Linksys WRT54GL wireless router. The router is wired to a desktop PC (WinXP) and a laptop is connected wirelessly (WinXP).

The desktop PC has a USB-connected Canon printer. I would like to be able to print on the Canon from the laptop using the wireless connection. Unfortunately, I am not sure where to start. Could somebody help or direct me to somewhere in this forum or elsewhere where a guide (step-by-step, if possible) is available.

Thanks for this. But do I really need more hardware? And yet another power adaptor?? I think I will give it a miss. But thank you for drawing my attention to this.

Option 1: You can share the printer that attached to the desktop, but this means the desktop has to be switched on in order for the laptop to see the printer. Below is one of probably many guides to this found by googling

Option 2: can your printer connect via ethernet to your router? (mine does) this avoids the need for either a print server or having the desktop pc switched on.

Thank you for the link. Not sure about the Ethernet-printer issue. Assuming I can connect it, how does it work? Would I need to get rid of the USB cable? Do I need to do something to the router? Apologies for sounding clueless.

I was able to give my printer an ip address - what is your printer model?

It is Canon Pixma iP 4500. Trying to visit the Canon site to check the specs but doesn't seem to be working...

It mentions only USB interface. I could check when i get home, but I doubt it would work...

Canon web site says it's usb only - looks like you'll have to get some hardware to make option 2 work. Not an expert but having a quick google to see if anything else comes to mind.

I've used a couple of these in the past to make USB printers networkable. They're simple and effective.

Don't be put off by the price. You can grab them quite cheaply on eBay if you take your time.
