20mb plan and only getting 7mb max

Hi,
Sorry if there has been an over-kill in discussion in this topic, but i guess its different with each case.

I am currently on the 20mb plan and tried with http downloads and newsgroup (giganews) with max connections and can only reach 7.5mb. 7.5mb is far short of 20mb and I don't see how virgin media can charge me for the 20mb plan if I can't even reach the speed of the cheaper 10mb plan.

My location is wokingham, berkshire.

As per all the other threads, have you use the TCP-optomizer program? Have you tried speed test at different times of the day/night and also the usual up/down signal levels would go a long way to allow people to help :)

Thanks, but surely even if different times of the day would have an effect, it wouldn't have that much of an impact to bring speeds down to less than 50%?

I heard that old modems could be a problem, as I have had the same modem since we first started with ntl with 512kbps plan

Which modem do you have? Is it 20meg capable?
Are you using a router? If so, is it 20meg capable and have you tried a connection directly from the modem to the computer?

Post what modem you have and your power levels from your config pages of your modem. The should be a sticker on the bottom saying what model.
Open a browser and in the address bar put> 192.168.100.1 password and username are both root if required.
What I want you to post is the Downstream and the Upstream plus what model the modem is for me thanks.
DO NOT POST YOUR MAC ADDRESS OR SERIAL NUMBER

Are you connecting the modem via usb or ethernet?

Information posted above and will check if there is any difference connecting to modem, but have never had problems with modem connected via router

Downstream is alittle high, I think you have an Ambit 100-120, you will need a new modem as that one doesnt support 20mb.

Re: 20mb plan and only getting 7mb max

contact Tech support if the modem has ntl 100, 120 or 200 under it on sticker then a new modem is needed.

Re: 20mb plan and only getting 7mb max

To be honest I am very angry then they didn't tell me in the first place if my modem was compatible. I paid for 20mb plan for a service i didn't receive and spent more than i should. They can't expect to get away like this, ripping of their customers.

You should ask for (and receive) credit for the time you had the incorrect modem - ring up Customer Services.

True, but to a non-tech savy person, how does she/he know they are getting 20mbit? the trust is with virgin media that they are giving what they say they are giving.

Thanks. I should be receiving a new modem with 5 working days and got the required credit for the months I have been with the 20mbit plan.

Thanks
