Help Please.

Hi Guys,

I have XP, a TP-Link TL-WR642G and Virgin broadband modem.

I can get an internet connection no problem when I connect from the modem direct but I cannot get on when I use the router.
I successfully installed the router some weeks ago and everything was fine but now I cannot get on the internet at all and as I cannot get on the internet I cannot get onto the TP-Link website to reset everything. I have done this manually at the back of the router but to no avail. I have been on the phone today for an hour with Virgin but they couldn't work out the problem either. I have gone into network connections and into status, in the support tab it has connection status, Address type-Invalid IP address, IP address 0.0.0.0, subnet gateway 0.0.0.0. The TCP/IP is set to obtain automatically. I really don't know where to start as I am not a computer expert. Has anyone any ideas please?

Re: Help Please.

Try powering everything (modem, router, PC) off for 30 seconds. Then power up modem, let settle, router, let settle and finally PC.

Have you recently updated any software on your computer - maybe some windows patches? Is the network card still installed correctly, or have the drivers been changed somehow. You could try deleting these and reinstalling. Is there a firewall or antivirus software running. Can those be disabled, if only for troubleshooting purposes (you want the antivirus to be running under normal circumstances.

I have done all the powering up in order.
There is no new software or patches.
I have tried to obtain comnnection with the firewall and security off also.
I'm stumped!
Thanks for answering.

Hmmm.

pc to modem works ok, so that hardware is good.

add router (and presumably a 2nd cable) no workee.

What I'd do in this situation is first try the pc to modem layout again with each cable in turn to prove they are both good. If that's OK then do a factory reset on the router so you have a known good state.

I've done the factory reset at the back of the router as I can't get onto the TP-Link website to do a reset there, but no change. Both my cables work.
Thanks for helping.

Thanks for taking the time to help me.
When I connect using the router the ipconfig is:
LAN connection-
IP Address 169.254.116.132
Subnet Mask 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway 169.254.116.132

Wireless Network connection-
IP Address 0.0.0.0
Subnet Mask 0.0.0.0
Default Gateway no figures at all

I've never had to try this & credit to KevAmiga for the info, but you could try what he suggests in this post

& report back - the extra detail may help someone who knows about these thing to suggest what to do next?

Re: Help Please.

169.254.*.* address indicates that the router is not responding to the pc. It's a windows default that is set when the pc requests an IP address and nobody answers.

The system can't find a DHCP server to get an address. Under the circumstances I'd say there's a good chance your router is broken.

All the rest of the hardware has been checked and the router reset to default settings. That really only leaves a router failure in the frame.

are you trying to connect wirelessly or wired to the router? if wirelessly, delete all the wireless profiles and try again. If wired, make sure you connect with a good straight-through cable to one of the swich ports of the router.
