BT now caps *everyone*

I know it's no consolation for us, but probably a sign of how things are going, but BT caps ALL users in the evening to just 15% of their nominal bandwidth

Makes VM capping at 25% almost seem generous doesn't it

Moved to 'Other ISPs' as this is about BT, not Virgin.

A BT spokesman confirmed Samknows' data. He said its throttling does apply to all customers, but emphasised it is only for peer-to-peer applications and does not affect streaming services such as BBC iPlayer.
If only VM thought of that...

I always thought that BBC iPlayers full install used P2P on downloading ;)

If only we lived in an enlightened country where the regulator was against this type of throttling: http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/25...cting-net.html

They do for their ADSL service.

If you are on cable broadband, as you can get BBC iPlayer on Virgin TV, why would you want it on your computer ;)

Actually this is not technically true, unfortunetly what is true how ever is they do cap/shape p2p but the way it is done means it completely cripples the whole conneciton until you close the p2p app off.

This does NOT affect bbc iplayer at all and this is better than what VM have come out with (STM)

I dont know I think thats really bad as they have been shaping BT connections aswell I can see all ISP's soon coming in with STM or Capping as the internet is growing faster than the ISP's bandwidth

BT's FTTH has no STM/Shaping what so ever and the trialists often enjoy 100Mbit (its set up as speed bursts so you only get that speed with big file downloads, quite a good setup).

AFAIK BT is expecting not to use any sort of shaping/throttling on their fibre rollout as the networks backhaul will be massively upgraded allowing for much less congestion and no need for shaping (much in the same way fios works).

VM, however, cannot afford to upgrade their backhaul/network linkups (as they have only just upgraded to 40G while BT is 100G)

Well lucky BT customers can get rid of shaping by 2012, I dont like BT there speeds r **** and they lie to customers and spy on you, simple I would never ever use BT for a ISP.

As for Virgin I deal with stm I would prefer it to be removed but I can work round it, as all I do is download and play xbox live which alot of customers do aswell

Which was fine when their STM was only 4-9PM.

But 10am-3pm is not peak time, i'm not quite sure how they manage to get away with it.

And yes alot of customers do that and they are the ones who hit the STM.

No you can't ;) You can turn off the uploading side of the P2P but not the downloading...

Trialist's enjoying no shaping does not mean that BT won't be forced to do so when the product goes live retail. VM (TW and NTL) didn't traffic shape when they launched their respective BB services, it only kicked in the last two years or so, TW being the first I seem to recall.

TW oversubscribed and had a network that in some areas was falling apart, when the two companies merged most of the top brass changed to telewest people, that's why we have STM, because they dont want to pay to upgrade the network which they have oversubscribed, apparently because of debt issues, however it doesnt stop them giving each other huge bonuses every year.

VM only has multiple 40Gbit network link ups, BT has 100Gbit.

There is no need to shape on docsis3/FTTH providing you have good network link ups as to not cause congestion.

The only reason VM are shaping 50Mbit is due to the fact they simply dont have that kind of bandwith available.

50Mbit from VM is not a serious product, its a willy waving thing.
