Lost Packets
Hi Guys, i hope someone can give me a bit of help. I am getting terrible lag in online games and very slow web browseing. I phoned VM support but all I was told is to reboot my modem and everything is fine.....
well it isn't, I play online games onw the xbox360 and most night Halo3 is unplayable... web browseing seem to be going along at a crawl. I am not sure what else to do. Heres the results of a few tests amnd info: 4mb virgin media L broadband (i think its gone to 10mb last week), I live in Nottingham, I have a Ambit 100 modem and a dlink DIR-655 router (I have also tried pluging in direct to the modem) Date 05/08/08 21:35:04 Speed Down 465.17 Kbps ( 0.5 Mbps ) Speed Up 435.22 Kbps ( 0.4 Mbps ) Port 8095 Server speedtest2.adslguide.org.uk http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedt...854324713.html Ping statistics for www.bbc.co.uk: Packets: Sent = 903, Received = 833, Lost = 70 (7% Loss) <-- is this normal? Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 11ms, Maximum = 179ms, Average = 19ms |
Re: Lost Packets
same problems here i posted last weekend about the abysmal web surfing and online gaming, nothing has improved during peek time, cannot view some websites and the ones i can it takes for ever for it to load, as for playing any online games on my 360 or lotro is impossible thats if i can even connect to the servers!
during the day its fine. however i was off on friday and monday this week and in the afternoon everything is running as fast as normal but come about 6:45pm it all suddenly goes to a crawl and i might as well just turn it all off till it gets to about 11pm then things start to improve again, when i rang vm support last week i was told it must be something on my PC blocking or slowing my connection down, which it clearly isnt. |

Re: Lost Packets
when launching IE or firefox I occasionally get blank pages saying the page cannot be displayed and so on. Also with sites that I visit I get the same. It's only happened for the last 2/3 days though. I still get silly pings in the evening aswell.
It's nothing on my PC or my router thats causing the page loading problems so I wonder what they are doing now  |

Re: Lost Packets
Try checking your modem power levels,
Type "192.168.100.1" without quotes in the address bar, when prompted for a username and password they are both "root" without quotes. Ad post your downstream and up stream power levels form there. |
Re: Lost Packets
Downstream Receive Power Level : -1.34 dBmv
Downstream SNR : 31.87 dB Upstream Transmit Power Level : 49.00 dBmv |

Been getting between 4 & 12% packet loss (probally more) since 3pm, it does this usually 3 days of the week.. then the rest of the days things are fine... so dont really understand what the problem is. Going to phone vm in the morning as ive had enough of being fobbed off with the people after 6 (when I get home from work). I find the packet loss test at : http://www.irishisptest.com/runmyspeed.php is really accurate as I measure it against a -t ping test via a tracert. |
Re: Lost Packets
hi
yesterday I posted my problem on the virgin newsgroup (virginmedia.support.broadband.cable) and I had an engineer looking at this. Quote:

Re: Lost Packets
I had an engineer in today and he said that my modem was too old (7 years) they replaced it with an ntl:250 (with virgin media logo on)
I have had a fantastic internet since (youtube accually works properly), gonna test online games in a bit and I will post ping and tracert info later |
