A few questions about cable...

Hello guys, I'm not much of an expert when it comes to networking so I hope you lot can give me a few pointers!

1. I have an old NTL connection on a 120 modem. I have tried to connect my notebook up to the internet by just swapping over the ethernet cable from the existing PC to the notebook but no connection is made. Same goes for a different desktop PC. Is this normal? Is the cable connection locked down to the MAC address on the existing PC?

2. I would like to set up a wireless connection for this broadband but I'm worried that this apparent lock down will prevent any other computers from accessing it. Will the wireless router happily beam the connection with no problems?

3. Will any wireless cable router work with the NTL modem or do I have to go ahead and buy the one virgin are offering?

thought I'd better clear these things up before I go spending my hard earned cash!

Cheers
Chris

Re: A few questions about cable...

Hi ChrisoffLam

1) you will need to switch off both the modem and the machine connected to it if you swap the cable over. switch on the modem, wait for the ready light to stay solid, then boot your machine up. this should cure that issue.

2) wireless will be fine. just plug the wireless router into the modem in the same fashion as above.

3) I don't see why it would make a difference, so long as you buy a router designed for cable, not ADSL. I have a linksys which does the job fine.

Others may be able to offer more help....
