speeding up networking in win 2008

Title says it all really - got a server running win2k8 - copy stuff from/to xp machine is slow - I'm getting <10Mbps, and this is on a wired connection - get quicker speed copying from xp to xp on a laptop via wireless..

suggestions/fixes gratefully accepted.

Wait until it's officially released and then wait until SP2...... ;)

Kymmy

I was under the impression that it was already officially released?

yes its officially released and its released with SP1 (it uses vista core). Firewall? use the resource monitor to try and see a potential bottleneck. Server 2008 is very quick so it's not inherent.

server 2008 is probably one of the most stable platforms out there. It's easy to bash Microsoft but their server products really are rock solid.

That's the thing, I don't think it's a performance issue, per se - the server is reasonably specced - 3gb, 1.8 dual core opteron... and I think 2008 handles well in general - but I know its based on the Vista stack, and I know there's lots of complaints about vistas network performance.

I'm copying 836MB to the server, and it's quoting time of 22 minutes.

There is something wrong then as our 2008 servers work near on wire speeds. Like I say, performance manager is good at finding bottlenecks.

Are you copying to the server or from the desktop, eg logged on to the server via RDP? Years ago, I seem to remember it being faster to 'copy to' than 'push from'.
Also what happens if you use ftp or scp to copy rather than explorer (even xcopy!)? Explorer is general very inefficient.

My comment was in jest, When I did IT support we never counted a product as officially released until at least SP2 ;) and even then probably never :p:

Possibly a dodgy / overworked switch between you and the server?

I know that at work, most of our network is gigabit, but some of the switches give a lot slower speed, even though they are all 3com (although we have two or three models) and all gigabit capable.

I'm rdping to the server from there - I will try your suggestions later on.

probably not - this is at home, and I have one switch and one router. copying from xp to xp goes via the same route.
