Actiontec/hp system restore/ntl modem

Hi All,

Hope the title of the thread gives a good overview about what I'm about to ask for help on!

I have an HP PC which has a "secret" D Drive which can be used to restore the computer to its original factory settings (which I wish to do). The problem is that I have lost the installation/driver disks for my Actiontec Router and my NTL modem and I don't really wanna lose my internet or shell out money for replacements. My setup is something like this:

Cable goes into the modem, modem connects to the router, router connects to the pc. Both are powered independantly.

Is there any way I can either save my modem/router drivers or re-install my modem/router without a disk on my newly recovered computer.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks
Ben Taylor

You don't need any drivers for the router and since the modem is connected to the router, you don't need any drivers for that either, all you will need are your network interface drivers which should be installed by the restore system.

HTH

Oh and welcome :)

oh brilliant! so all I have to do is carry out the destructive HP restore (leaving my router and modem plugged in) and when windows starts for the first time it should detect and reconfigure itself?

That's the theory :D As long as the Network interface is not some strange addin card that has been added since the PC was built then all should be well!

Get to it and let us know how you get on!

brilliant. thanks a lot for that. If you don't hear anything then it didn't work!! haha!

By the way - the pc has had no upgrades what so ever from being new. My laptop just died suddenly so I wanted to get my desktop pc running again but there was a lot of stuff on there I didn't need so I thought i'd just perform a destructive recovery and start from scratch!

oh and just one more thing. If this fails.... is there anyway to go back?

Re: Actiontec/hp system restore/ntl modem

short answer is no....

Unless you have something like Symantec Ghost or Drive Image and a spare external USB hard disk that is big enought to hold an image of your hard drive.

normally the System Restore function works pretty well and without any issues. HP/Compaq's system restore was always pretty bomb proof compared with others

As I said, assuming you are connected to your modem via your router via Ethernet, you do not need any drivers other than the ones that your PC came with, you certainly don't need any drivers for the router.

Thanks for all the responses guys. I'm gonna be starting the recovery tomorrow night so hopefully i'll be back on here on thursday to tell you all the good news... by the way, Graham, re drivers which came with my PC, I'm on XP if that affects anything.

Thanks

Re: Actiontec/hp system restore/ntl modem

The restore partition should restore your system to how it was on the day you received it, any hardware you have added to the PC since will require drivers, since the router and modem are connected via the Ethernet Port as long as you are using your OnBoard Ethernet adaptor for this then you will be all set, drivers for things like printers will need to be installed afterwards, XP has quite a library of drivers for this sort of thing but they aren't always that good and it's usually a good idea to install the manufacturer's software!

HTH :)

Sorry for bothering you guys again. Theres just 1 more thing. The router is connected to the pc via a USB connection. Does that change anything?

I just want to make sure this will deffo work before I do it lol!

Re: Actiontec/hp system restore/ntl modem

Umm I've never seen a router you connect to your PC via USB, are you sure?

tayloben 02-07-2008 20:27

Re: Actiontec/hp system restore/ntl modem

Re: Actiontec/hp system restore/ntl modem

Umm ok... does your PC have an Ethernet port?

Re: Actiontec/hp system restore/ntl modem

Yeah. The router connects to the PC through an ethernet port aswel! But it seems to still work if I pull out the USB connection
