Usb To Ethernet Never Ending Problems

Hi There

This is a problem i have always had but have just ignored up until now. I have no option if i want the Ps3 online but to seek help for this. For the last 2 years i have been using USB connected to the cable modem with no problems what so ever. The minute i plug in ethernet and things just don't go right. Ethernet connection drops if i am downloading a large file and the pc needs rebooted. I have even noticed using Mirc (a chat client) that when you login it cannot find my ident which works fine when using USB.

This is definetley a software issue and not a hardware one as my modem has worked great for a number of years. I do not get the limited or no connectivity (it is ticked to show if this happens) when the ethernet connection dies.

I am using Windows Xp - Sp2
Scientific Atlanta Cable Modem which is working properly.

Can anyone help please ?

Neil

Have you tried updating your drivers for your network card?

What model is the modem is it a DPX100 or 110 or a EPC2100 and when you plug the Ethernet cable in do you take out the USB cable.

Can you post your power levels as well by going to http://192.168.100.1/

Re: Usb To Ethernet Never Ending Problems

I seem to have remedied the problem from the network connections. Removed the tick from Authenticate as computer when computer information is available.

Scientific Atlanta 2100
Software Version v2.0.2r1256-060303
Receive Power Level 13.0 dBmV
Transmit Power Level 41.0 dBmV
Cable Modem Status Operational

Just seems to be the problem with the ident server which must have to do with something but not sure as to what yet.

Nikesh. I had updated my drivers a few weeks ago

So any ideas as to what could be causing the ident problem on Irc ?

That is a good modem but the is a problem see above where I have made your receive power bigger its to high it should be between -12 and 12 not 13 as above you need to call Virgin on 151 option 3 and tell them.

You did not post your SNR which should be between 29 and 50

I have that set and dont have any problems

You say you know its a software problem, how do you come to that conclusion? Could be your ethernet card, ethernet cable or even the ethernet output of the modem none of these would have been used if you were using USB.

The power levels would be the same whether you use ethernet or USB so why do you think this is the cause of the ethernet problem and not causing the same issue on USB?

K.. Maybe i got the software issue wrongly mis diagnosed.

Ok. So why is the Ethernet connection dying every 8 minutes ? I have been logged onto mirc and i can see it disconnecting me and reconnecting every 8 minutes. No use if i am in the middle of a game. Any ideas ??

Sorry my fault I should have been clearer but I was going out when I posted that.

I was trying to say that you have an issue with the power level as well as the other issue which needs looking at.

You may find that you have different firewall settings when running in ethernet mode. XP SP2 would have turned this on by default for an ethernet connection and it could be why ident is not working.

For those that know the modem does it have a firewall built in ? and does it automatically port forward incoming ports to the main client.

I take it its a modem rather than a router (only works with one computer and not multiple directly)
