I'd like to think that this wouldn't happen in Britain, but I wouldn't bet on it. Its truly sickening to think that we live in a society where this happens, people so selfishly wrapped up in their own lives they are prepared to just walk by looking the other way. Imagine interviewing any of those people if for example that had been their elderly father laying there being ignored, they would be slating the by-passers as inhuman, what a world...

I don't think it's as simple as lack of caring alone. In America and this country we now have a legal system that penalises people for trying to help.
If someone had moved that man out of the road or even lifted his head to put a pillow underneath there would be a queue of lawyers waiting to sue you for aggravating his injuries.
Until such time as we are safe from such malicious prosecutions I'm not sure that I would dare offer help either.

Nobody would expect a member of the public to try and offer medical assistance, I'm talking of just being there for the old boy, talking to him or reassuring him whilst waiting for an ambulance to arrive, nobody is going to sue you for exercising a bit of human compassion. Besides I'd imagine these stories of suing helpful passersby are 99% urban myths, the sort of thing whereby you only hear one side of the incident in the tabloids, and look what believing it has done, its given us another excuse to walk on by.

No matter what the consequences are to me, I'd be at that persons side in a flash! Even if it meant being prosecuted and sent down for life. I'd rather live my life in solitary confinement knowing I did the right thing, the human thing, than to be free because I did nothing. I couldn't live with myself for that.

Kudos to you Enuff, it will be a sad day if people were to follow DaiNastys example.

I'd like to think you're right about the 'urban myth' aspect, although that last 1% could still cost you dearly.
I'd have no hesitation in trying to comfort someone in a situation like that or trying to divert traffic to keep him safe from further harm. However that would be my limit and would not include any sort of physical contact.
