Free swimming for all by 2012??

Sounds like a great idea especially since it cost £17 for my wife and 2 kids to go swimming just last week !!!!

Now all the people need is some swimming pools.........

Isn't it only for the elderly and the young?

The article states:

"Charges at 1,600 municipal pools are to be scrapped – initially for 20 million over-60s and under-16s.

But Gordon Brown and Andy Burnham, the Culture Secretary, will pledge that by Olympic year in 2012 swimming will be free for everyone at pools run by local authorities."

Of course it may not happen quite like that....

Since our pools are just being privatised, do they still count as 'run by the local authority'?

I can see a lot of pools being closed for 'urgent structural reasons' just before this comes in.

The pools around here are run by private companies but still subsidised and supported by the local councils

Ours are run by a charitable trust supported by the local council.

Perhaps they're hoping an increasing number of pensioners will drown, thus saving on pension and health costs..

Well it sounds like a good idea. If you do wish to excercise in other ways its also free of charge. Just open your front door and put one foot in front of the other in succesion. This is known as walking. If you do it quickly its called jogging or running. Also you can cycle free of charge~!

Spot on ;)

Swam in the sea for the first time in the other day, man, clear water, amazing stuff to swim in. A Bit frightening though, i couldn't see the bottom where i was swimming still, and there were a few Jellyfish around... I'm actually a very weak swimmer, but still, i managed about 60m or so.
