Davicom DM9601 USB to Ethernet Adapter
 

Hi All.

I've been connected for 4 years via my set top box and an ethernet cable to the side of my Fujitsu laptop without any problems.
Provider is NTL/Virgin.
To save myself having to replace the ethernet cables every few weeks because of the retaining clip in the end snapping and it falling from my laptop I bought an adapter which plugs into the usb socket.
I load the drivers from the disc, connect everyhing up but for some reason I cannot aquire my network address so therefore cannot connect to the net.
Am I trying something which won't work or am I missing something?
Any suggestions on what to do or maybe a better solution.

I'm wondering if it is because you are using a set top box, some of which require a 'crossover' ethernet cable - is it possible the laptop connector can auto-compensate for this, wheras the usb adapter cannot???

It's not working because the STB is picking it up as a new computer*. To switch network cards, you need to reboot the STB and the computer.

Then, attempt to access any web page, and the STB should re-direct you to the "Computer Provisioning page" where you register a new PC. If it doesn't, try going to http://start.ntl or http://autoreg.autoregister.net (I can't remember, but I think the autoreg address is for modems).

You will need both your Personal ID number and PIN to continue. These will be in the welcome pack, but if you don't have that, you'll need to contact Customer Services.

The site guides you through the process of registering the new PC.

When it has finished, you will need to reboot the STB again, and may need to reboot the PC.

As a security procedure (which Stand Alone Cable Modems don't use), the Set Top Box requires that any device attached to it be registered. It uses the MAC address of the network card (essentially, a serial number that is supposedly unique) to identify the device. Thus, changing the network card causes the STB to pick up the machine as a new device.
