best way to get V+ upscaling on 2 TV's
 

My friend has 42" plasma in bedroom (main use) & another one downstairs

Currently has Sky but is moving to V+ (because of upscaling) and is trying to figure best way to get upscaling on both TV's which rules out video sender

1/ How much extra is it for 2nd V+ box?

2/ Would VM plumb the cable in both rooms so he can move the box downstairs for the few occasions he needs it there?

3/ Any ideas?

1/ £100 install fee for the second box and an extra £5 a month on the bill

2/ No I dont think they would do this as the box is only meant for one TV

That one's not going to do it - it's a device for displaying one of four sources on a single display. You want a distribution amp, which will decode HDCP and then re-encode it to multiple devices.

Here's a link to a simple 1x2 distribution amp. Not too expensive, really. The site is worth a read if you're considering HDMI distribution:

You can always get a second non-V+ plumbed in the other location (I think it's free with a V+ box, or is if you get the right deal). You could then theoretically switch them over ... but I don't think Virgin technically allow you to unplug the equipment yourself.

Buy a Slingbox - available from John Lewis and all reputable retailers! It's under £200 and you plug it it, download the software and lo and behold, your cable telly viewing is available on your laptop - not just in your house, but in the UK and anywhere else in the world where you can receive broadband. A one off payment.

A well-worth puchase, for me. Co-incidentally about a month after I bought it, my Philips main tv's CRT went mental. Being a bit cash-strapped at the time, Slingbox came to our rescue.

A Slingbox is not really a solution here although they are fantastic.

Even using the new Slingbox Pro or Solo's (which support component HD rather than HDM), the picture quality, even locally in the house, is not going to be a HD quality and you would still need to have some kind of PC device connected to the second TV to run the Slingmedia software and get a picture.

Possibly, when the new Slingcatcher appears (still coming soon grrr....), it might be an answer, depending on the picture quality.

Funny enough, I'm about to replace our second TV with an LCD and want to do something similar, so I was having a chat to the brother in law about it (he works for a company that does professional AV installations).

He was saying he would use a cheap HDMI splitter amp (like the link Foddy mentions above) and then send it over a cat 5 cable using some senders like this - http://www.automatedhome.co.uk/New-P...ffordable.html as the prices have started to drop below £100.

I'm considering it as a solution as, to use Slingcatcher, I would need to put a an extra cat 5 run into the bedroom anyway.

What you need is a hdmi splitter like this one:-

I purchased one recently to ouput my HD to my TV and Projector you will probably have to use a mains adaptor with it but it should allow cable lengths of about 15 metres, so placement is the key and some drilling through ceilings and floors.
