tv problem

I own a Sony 21" flat-screen tv about 5 years old now.

I can switch on my tv and view a programme. However, every now and then it would go on standby by itself. The screen goes black suddenly. At least I think it's standby coz I have to press the standby button to get it to switch back on again. Also the red light blinks and blinks during this event.

This incidence is happening more and more often. Previously it happens like every few hours, nowadays it happens every few minutes.

Is this a major problem? Is my tv worth repairing or should I consider getting myself a new one ?

Hi mate,

Welcome to the forum.

Personally.. id just buy a new one, it sounds like something is dieng or dead already. Which will cost an absolute fortune to repair. It's going to be cheaper to buy a new one!

I had a similar problem with my Wega, which is about 8 years old.

It turns out that the flashing standby light is actually a diagnostic system. The sequence of blinks indicates where it has found a fault. See

Oddly, my fault disappeared after christmas..

Could it be interference from another source. I've heard that some of these new energy saving light bulbs interfere with a lot of remotely controlled equipment. You haven't started using these recently have you?:)

The Sony's don't normally flash their power lights when in standby mode. Normally, it does mean the diagnostic circuit has picked up a fault..

Thanks for your prompt reply guys.

I've had another look at the tv, it flashes 2x then pauses, then flashes 2x again.
According to the Sony Blinking Codes:
TWO Blinks---B+ over current protection (OCP) , unit goes to the standby
mode then displays the 2 blink fault. Could be a short in the power supply of
any of the circuits.

Gonna try to change the fius in the plug, lol. Some how I don't think it's that easy. Anyways .... I'm hoping for a miracle ... my sony will work well again.

cheers

this is a new piece of sony firmware which automatically scans the EPG and on finding that it is as usual, wall to wall mind numbing dross,it puts the TV into standby to prompt you to do something more worthwhile than watching the visual opiate.
