new member with cable problem looking for ideas

Hi Folks
I am a newbie here. I live in Leicester le3 with an xl packadge, ntl home modem (quite old) going through a net gear mr814v2tw router, into an ethernet pc using xp.
I have real problems with download speed. I contacted virginmedia tech support who say the modem is receiving what they send, and they say its my computer losing 30% of packets. I dont have any P2P software and really not being massively technical wondered if you has any hints or ideas?
Could this be the router losing this? James in Leicester

If you have a 120 modem and the XL package it won't give you proper speeds, even the L package it's unlikely.

If you are using ethernet, why are you using a router? Much better speeds are obtained direct from the modem - you can get quite long cables if that's a problem. A router (NAT) will give added security, of course, but nothing that a good firewall can't do. Can't really comment about the type of modem, except that I have a NTL250 on XL and often get 19.5 Mb/s via ethernet (7/8 max. when I use wireless upstairs).
