Netgear Router Problem?
i hope someone can help me as i have just set up my free netgear wireless router from virgin media.
it is up and running fine but when i go to the shieldsup website at grc.com to check the security for this router it comes back with the following info: Ping Reply: RECEIVED (FAILED)  Your system REPLIED to our Ping (ICMP Echo) requests, making it visible on the Internet. Most personal firewalls can be configured to block, drop, and ignore such ping requests in order to better hide systems from hackers. This is highly recommended since "Ping" is among the oldest and most common methods used to locate systems prior to further exploitation. this was previusly always closed when i had just my virgin cable modem and was not a problem and was passed but now it has failed this test. i am a total newbee to wireless routers and this is the first i have and i have set up the password and username fine and the security is showing green. once again thansk for any help and advice anyone cam give me in layman terms please!! |
Re: Netgear Router Problem?
You should have access to the admin pages of the router. Somewhere in there should be a setting to turn off the ping responder.

Re: Netgear Router Problem?
Try this. http://192.168.1.1/start.htm with default name and password. You will find this on the label on the back of the router.
Once on that page select WAS Setup on the left hand side. In the middle box you can untick the Respond to Ping on Internet Port. Hope this helps as I had to find out the hard way after getting my router as part of the trial. If you need any more info just ask. |

Re: Netgear Router Problem?
you might need to change the default broadcast channel in wireless setup or try it without security and see if it connects then. If it does try enabling it again on a dfferent broadcast channel and keep on testing till you get a stable connection

Re: Netgear Router Problem?
Make sure that your phone supports the version of the wireless e.g 802.11B 802.11G 802.11N.

Re: Netgear Router Problem?
I've said this before and i'll say it again, Blocking ICMP on the WAN port is a bad move.
All this is doing is showing that there is a device connected on that IP address. nothing more nothing less. Blocking ICMP causes more issues than it solves Quote:
