Wireless AND Modem ??
Can you use a wireless and a modem - maybe not at the same time - but interchange them ??
Sounds like a weird question - but I am wired with a modem for my computer - but my son has a wireless laptop - so he needs a wireless signal and I need a wired one!!!! (I could ask him - but he just does a BIG sigh .... but if you do I won't hear them :o:) :dunce: |
Re: Wireless AND Modem ??
Wireless Routers allow for a wired connection as well as the wireless one ..

Re: Wireless AND Modem ??
the basic idea is pritty simple.
think of it like a chain, the wireless-router on the VM cable will always be after the cable modem. =VM-cable=<___>VM modem<===>wireless-router<===>wired-PC1 wireless-router<--->any-wireless-PC-with-a-wireless-card <---> =any-wireless connection <===> =straight RJ45 cable/wired connection. <___> = VM coax cable a (wireless)router connected to the Cable modem is required for simple connection of more than one PC at a time. |

Re: Wireless AND Modem ??
Whatever you do make sure you get the right equipment.
If you are on virginmedia or any connection with a cable modem, you will need a cable wireless router so that your modem goes into the router and then your Pc's either connect wirelessly with the router or into the back of the router for a wired connection. If you are currently on an ADSL connection, you will need a wireless router with built in modem. Make sure you do not get an ADSL router if you are using a cable modem as it won't work. |
Re: Wireless AND Modem ??
Just to be clear - the wireless isn't an alternative to the modem - at least with cable. You plug the wireless router into the cable modem.
Most wireless routers have wired connections that you plug your computer into while your son connects his laptop wirelessly. That's exactly what I've got set up. In fact, I've posted this message from my desktop PC connected by wire .... ---------- Post added at 18:30 ---------- Previous post was at 18:27 ---------- ... and this one from my laptop connected wirelessly :) Ain't technology wonderful? ;) |
