laptop charger, would it make a difference in output of amp.
 

i have an advent 7105 and the original charger says the output is 19v 3.42A
however this charger is broken and i was given a compaq charger from a guy at the computer shop...and it says on the charger 19v 3.16A

this new charger worked fine for a few weeks and now the laptop is not working, is this to do with the charger?

there was an issue with the power connector in the laptop being a bit loose (pushed back) but this was repaired over a month ago...

do i have any rights to return the charger back or get the power connector thing (charger plugs into) fixed again?

Have you got a volt-meter you can use to check if the charger is working?

If that is ok then I would suspect the power connector - best thing in that case would be to get the shop that did the repair to have another look at it - if they only fixed it a month ago they 'should' do it again for free, but unless they gave an explicit guarantee on the repair that isn't necessarily your 'right'.

Since the new power pack you were given was of a lower power rating than the laptop requires, you may have burned it out when the laptop has been trying to pull more than it can give. Most decent supplies will just cut out until they cool down rather than burn out. Compaq being a cheap make probably won't have had this protection.

Easiest way to find out is plug it in and if it has an LED see if it comes on. If not the PSU is dead or the fuse has gone. If it does, plug it into the laptop and see if the LED's on the laptop come on.If not, then wiggle the plug but hold it in a few different places to see if they come on. If they do when wiggled, the socket on the laptop is broken. If not, its either totally broken or its something else.

I had a similar experience with a laptop a few years ago. It turned out that the charger was unable to completely charge the battery, so the battery (after a few weeks) went completely dead, and the laptop wouldn't work.
