CPU running to hot?

Hi all,

My sister is complaining about the main computer being slow and freezing alot, so i thought it may be over heating, so i checked on everest, and it was a 63c. :erm:, i would think that is too hot, but the cpu temp is 48-53c when idle.

Specs are

AMD sempron 2400+ 1.66ghz
Asus A7V-400MX mobo
Maxtor 40GB hdd
512mb ddr333 ram.

That's way too hot for a Sempron.

Check the fan is still spinning, and of course, blow out any dust. Check temps again afterwards.

How old is the PC?

I dusted the fan heatsink fan out a couple of weeks ago, the fan spins at 3245rpm. Id say the pc dates back to about 2003-2004 judging by the hardware, custom built so im not really sure. I told my sister to turn it off for 20 mins.

Sounds like the Thermal Compound has dried over time, happened to the son of a friends PC. 30 seconds of Orthos just crashed it, but it would when the CPU was hitting over 80°C :)

Get some Arctic Silver and follow this guide: http://www.arcticsilver.com/pdf/appi...core_expsd.pdf

As mentioned above would try out new thermal paste first.

Re: CPU running to hot?

Well i havent changed the heatsink, but I did put a new (ish) fan on i had lying around, the temp has dropped by about 5c and is idling around 50c now, is that still too hot when idling? or is it what zingle said that alot of socket A cpus run hot..

Re: CPU running to hot?

in thats case with the socket how it is (with a raised part on the socket and recess part on the heatsink) your lucky you didnt break something

Re: CPU running to hot?

I'm glad i didnt break anything, clipping the heatsink back down is not a thing i like doing :p:
