exchange bb speeds

I currently have XL TV with V+ box and a second box
I am thinking of getting broadband (xl)

I know the speed is upto 20mb currently, what speeds am I realistically likely to get ?
I am in the Ipswich area

I have read that speeds are dependent on the number of people on bb in the area ? anyone know what the contention issues are like in Ipswich ?

Thank you

Hmm no experience of the connection issues in Ipswitch, but can I just ask, will it be the VIP package because your close the the specs for that anyway.

Here on 20mb as part of VIP package, I can pretty much max it at the right times of the day (taking traffic shaping into account)

If you have the Sky Sports channels it's definitely worth going onto the VIP package judging by what you've said.

What area in Ipswich are you in?

There is currently an ongoing fault in some areas of Ipswich, so depending where you are, you may be affected. I'm only getting 6Mb now at nearly 1am because of this (and getting cutouts regularly too).

However, if the service is optimal, I can get upto around 17Mb. I'm in IP1, Handford/London Rd area. :)

I am in the IP4 postal area, east ipswich

---------- Post added at 09:18 ---------- Previous post was at 09:02 ----------

I currently have XL TV, with the V+ box and a second box, I do not have the movies or sports
I was thinking of getting broadband xl, depending on the speeds, I currently get between 4-5mb on BT (I live a few miles from the foxhall exchange).

I call a few mobile numbers, I know BT rates are cheaper than Virgin Media rates, so I do not think I will go for the phone line

I know VIP is £85 a month and tripple XL - without Sky Movies/Sports is £65 a month

Have to think what I want....
not really bothered with sky movies, as I can get the filmflex service

The fault has apparantly been rectified now (though I was still having some connection issues myself last night). The details can be found here:

Interesting, thanks.

That will be of those, "No everything is allright on the UBR, must be the access network at fault",(oh really!!).

so, what is the general consenus ?
will I get the almost 20mb? dont want to get it and to find I am no better of than I am with ADSL from BT Broadband

I know it will be cheaper, but would it be better ?

Re: exchange bb speeds

Unless there is a problem with the install or the UBR you will be connected is not oversubscribed,(let the flood gates open, just to let you know the network is constantly upgraded depending on when it reaches certain criteria). So you should get between 16-18Mb at most times. Personally i would get VM Broadband knowing the problems with getting an "UPTO" service with BT,(yes you can get many ISP's with ADSL, but they mainly all use BT to provide the service).
