Sat Navs On Phones
I have a N95 8gb phone. If I wanted to use sat nav on it, free of charge, can I do so? Would it be simply a case of downloading tomo tom and just using it? Or would i have to pay for the connection?

Re: Sat Navs On Phones
does that give you real time directions (voice activated). As far as I am aware my N95 comes with maps and gps positioning but if i want real time voice commands telling me where to turn I need to pay a fiver a month or so.
A friend is running tom tom navigator 6 on his n73, with voice commands, and he's told me I cant use it on my n95 :( Does anyone know where i can get something I can run on the n95? |

Hi, don't forget that Tomtom do not support the n95 internal gps receiver but does work with a seperate gps receiver via bluetooth.

BTW - TomTom is NOT free - you need to buy a copy if you want to use it.

A good free GPS application is Nav4all. Just go to http://www.nav4all.com on your mobile. Be aware: Nav4all (as with most phone based GPS apps) does download maps as and when it needs them, so you may need a good data plan on your mobile. Nokia Maps does this as well, but Nokia do provide a map downloading util that you can run on a PC,and then upload the map(s) on to the phone. Tom tom, AFAIK, will run on the N series phones, but will not use the internal GPS. I have to say AFAIK, as I don't want to install a cracked copy, there is no demo available and I am not willing to pay a lot of money just to find out if I like the software or not. |

Route 66 also does a great job. Not very expensive either :)

Also, you can try Mobile gmaps (nothing to do with Google maps) at http://www.mgmaps.com/, although I never had a lot of luck with this.
Finally, Google Maps is available on the n95 (http://www.google.co.uk/mobile/gmm/stp-js.html ) , this version, as well as apparently supporting the n95's internal GPS (the previous version didn't), it support's it's own "My Location" system that works out roughly (to within a few hundred metres in a densely populated area) where you using your mobile network. |

Be aware though: It has a short cable, so if you have a tower (like me), then you'll need a USB extension. |
Re: Sat Navs On Phones
I've decided to buy a dedicated sat nav unit on the basis that the mobile one is too fidly, and not really portable in terms of I have to keep my phone with me. We can swap the dedicated unit from one car to another. My missus will need it sometimes and I can't just hand over my phone etc etc.
So whilst we're on the subject, can anyone recommend a decent dedicated sat nav? |

Re: Sat Navs On Phones
I have satnav on my n95 8gb with voice directions, it came free as part of the contract, or you can subscribe through vodafone (if you're with vodafone?) I was told that it cost £30 a year. and the battery lasts longer on the 8gb version than it does on the standard n95.
I also have the tomtom one which is excellent. |
