Wireless router
Hello Everyone, I want to go wireless soon and need to know how to do this. I have not got a cable modem in my system as the cable for the broadband internet appears to come from the box outside and enters the house to connect to my computer. Do I need to get Virgin Media to remove this cable and do I require a cable modem to connect the wireless router to? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Wireless router
Hi and :welcome: to the forums.
Are you a virgin customer ? If you are on virgin cable broadband then you should have a cable box or set top box somewhere being used as a cable modem. It is only in some cases where people live in flats where I have seen that their broadband comes straight out of a wall and into the back of their PC. It would be worth knowing if it is ADSL or Cable that you have. Whichever one it is, you should be able to buy an ADSL wireless router if you have ADSL broadband. This device has a modem built in and will also be your wireless router. If you have cable broadband you should already have a cable modem or set top box you are connected to. You will need a broadband wireless router and this will sit between the cable modem and your computer. Note: You need a cable wireless router and not an ADSL one in this case. See here for some choices of router: http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/87...info-here.html |
Re: Wireless router
I am a Virgin Media customer and have a set top box. It appears that the telephone and broadband internet cables come from the outside box along the wall outside and enter the house into the hall. The broadband cable then runs up the stairs to the computer. Internally there is a cable to the set top box for the tv and a network type cable.

Re: Wireless router
The Set Top Box acts as your modem for the Cable Broadband Service. The principles of setting up wireless are similar in terms of the type of wireless router you need, whether you have a modem or Set Top Box (STB) connection.
Essentially, you power off the modem or STB, connect ethernet between modem / STB and router WAN (internet) side, connect ethernet between router and a PC, power up the modem / STB allow to settle, then power router and let settle, then PC. If you have a modem, everything should just connect, assuming the PC is set to autodetect connection stuff. Most cable suited router's shouldn't need much changing of settings. If you have a STB your router will need to be registered. The first time you try to use the internet you should get redirected to the provisioning screen. |
Re: Wireless router
Hi there,
I recently got Virgin broadband. I already had a digital set top box with an incoming optic fibre cable. I rang up Virgin, ordered the broadband and 2 days later they sent a package with:
Now, if you want to go Wireless, go buy a wireless router and plug this into the Virgin cable modem. So you will always have the 2 modems connected. HTH. Andy ;) |
Re: Wireless router
Thanks to everyone, I am a bit clearer now. Will get a wireless router and have a go at setting it up. Will let you know how I go on. Cheers.
