Linksys problem :(
 

hi guys, im new to this forum :) plz help.

i have virgin media broadband and have only one pc in my home. the internet connection works fine.

i recently bought a ps3, i was suggested to buy a linksys WRT54Gs router to go wireless so i could hook my ps3 up to the net.

i bought the router and have since been having problems connecting to the internet. when my virgin media modem is plugged in to the pc using a usb cable the internet works, but when i hook it up through the router with a ethernet cable it dont seem to work.

its wierd because when my pc is switched off my ps3 detects the wireless connection, but as soon as i switch my pc on the internet conection fails and the router fails to detect the ethernet connection.

i have tried changing my ethernet cables but it still dont seem to work.

The Virgin Media modem will only support either a USB connection or an ethernet connection. One at a time, not both together. To switch between the two, or to change the device connected to USB or ethernet, the modem must be powered off along with everything else directly connected to it.

hey thanks for the reply mate, i had both my pc and modem powered off , connecting a ethernet cable from the modem to the router, then another ethernet cable conecting it from my router to pc, but it still doesent work.

OK, assuming that you had unplugged the USB cable from the modem when you did the power off, we need to establish where the connection is falling over.

Let's confirm the setup should be:

Modem <> ethernet <> router WAN (internet) port
Router LAN port <> ethernet <> PC ethernet port
Router <> wireless <> PS3 wireless

Set it up now with a wired connection between router and PC, you can always move to wireless later on.

Power all off and set up wiring as above, power on modem and let settle, power router and let settle, power PC.

Can you now browse the internet form the PC, if so all is OK
If not, can you browse to the router admin page 192.168.1.1? if so the PC is OK, the router isn't speaking to the modem.

Let us know that result.

hey Rob, its working fine now, im actually linked up on the router and on the net. :) thanks for help mate.

but i have a question. my first try, the router found a connection, and the green light on the router appeared on number 1, as my ethernet cable was connected to the router in slot 1.

however when ever i turned my pc on, the green light would disapear, meaning my pc is not connected to the net. and would not allow me access to the net. do you know why this happens

this is the same problem i was having few day ago, and gave up on the router untill i found this forum :) hopefully the router dont turn its back on me agen.

for some reson somtimes the router picks up my pc connection and somtimes it dont, usually i used to turn off all the power and reset it and it worked fine, but now i dont know whats wrong with it, as soon as i turn my pc on it stops working.

but good news is its workin fine right now!!! thanks alot mate

i have another question, whats the difference between WEP and WPA???

and also theres a gaming mode on the router, i dont quite understand what to do on the settings, so i best to leave it how it is.

WEP is not very secure, WPA is secure.
If the PS3 is the ONLY wireless device, it should be OK with just WEP, but any PC's on wireless should be using WPA.

You might want to check you have the latest firmware (the operating system) on the router. Check with the linksys website.

Also if you have previously used USB on your PC, delete those drivers and disable the USB network connection. Might be worth checking too that your ethernet driver is current.
