running web server on VM 20MB service
 

I did a port scan from an external source and noticed that there are 3 ports open:

Port State Service
80/tcp open http
443/tcp open https
3389/tcp open msrdp

the bottom one im aware of, but port 80 and 443 i know to be used for HTTP servers. when i try to connect to the IP by sticking in my web browser, i get a white page, which it must load from somewhere. I dont have IIS running on windows atm, and no other 3rd party http servers. Any ideas what that is? im guessing its the modem thats using that port as well as 443 (https)

what is it thats using port 80 ?

nope no router, the VM modem is plugged directly into my pc using the ethernet cable.

OK got it working now, seems my system needed a reboot, but now IIS is doing its job :)

Try TCPView and see if it'll give you more info on the processes associated with those ports.

Bit risky having ports 80,443 & 3389 open without having a proper security appliance in place isn't it....
If you plan to have public facing web services and allow remote desktop access, then you should be thinking about installing something like a PIX 501 security appliance between your modem and you private home net, so you can properly manage & control incoming connections....IMHO anyway.....The PIX also has VPN capability for extra security
